NDS maakte oorspronkelijk alleen het access-system voor STB'n.
OpenTV de middleware (besturingssysteem).

Beiden zijn de partners maar nog meer concurenten van elkaar.
Ze ontwikkelen nu beide middleware, applicaties, advertising, etc dus het hele pakket. Alleen loopt OpenTV op het gebied van middleware voor en is verre uit marktleider.

OpenTV heeft BettingCorp overgenomen destijds die maakt dezelfde soort gambling applicaties als die NDS nu heeft geleverd aan Sky Italia.
NDS doet dus niets in opdracht van OpenTV zoals wordt gesuggereerd.

Veel dingen worden door elkaar gehaald.

Adelphia is overgenomen door Time Warner (TW) en Comcast en daar heeft die OpenTV/TW deal in eerste instantie betrekking op. Op de Motorola boxen.
Later op de SFA boxen en de overige markten van TW.

Rectificatie:

Murdoch en Malone hebben nog iets uit te vechten over NewsCorp belang van Murdoch waar Malone aardig belang in heeft genomen.
In een eerdere mail had ik het over Dish (Echostar) maar dat was onjuist.

In dit bericht lees je de plannen

News Corp. (NWS:NYSE - commentary - research - Cramer's Take) appears open to the idea of offloading some 10 small-and medium-market TV stations. And Liberty's (LINTA:Nasdaq - commentary - research - Cramer's Take) John Malone appears to be happy with the prospect of wrangling a deal for cash and some stations from Rupert Murdoch in return for his 18%, or $10 billion, stake in News.

Sources caution that a Malone/Murdoch deal isn't imminent. Given the experience of Univision -- which sought to induce a bidding war for its fast-growth broadcast properties, but has found little interest outside of bickering private equity types -- it's not clear how soon a transaction might take shape.

But if a News Corp./Liberty deal is negotiated, it would settle a long-simmering dispute between Murdoch and Malone. Malone shocked Murdoch two years ago by quietly shifting his longstanding nonvoting stake in News Corp. into a voting stake. A chastened Murdoch quickly put in a poison pill to keep Malone at bay.

A deal would be attractive for Liberty because of its tax efficiencies and because it is said to want to be in cash-generating businesses. The stations would certainly qualify.

Fox owns 35 TV stations, including ones in many major U.S. markets. The group throws off lots of cash and remains profitable.

Fox News Chairman Roger Ailes told UBS analysts last week that an exchange of a portion of News Corp. television stations for Liberty's voting stake in the company remains a possible near-term resolution. Sources say Fox wants to hold onto its stations in places like New York and Los Angeles.

The Federal Communications Commission is likely to soon approve the transfer of TV stations broadcasting licenses from Murdoch himself to News Corp., which is now incorporated in the U.S. from its native Australia. Murdoch personally holds the licenses because he is a U.S. citizen.

Opentv en NDS zijn geen partners maar elkaars grootste concurenten (de enige twee overgebleven zelfstandige middleware ontwikkelaars)
NDS maakte voor kort alleen conditional-acces kaarten en heeft na de overname van de Media-Highway (canal+) software toegang tot de middleware markt.
Probleem bij media-highway is dat het voornamelijk een distributie kanaal was dat programmas doorgaf en amper interactief werkte.
Immers het returnpath is de telefoonlijn en die is bij NDS's enige klant in de States (directv) maar bij 18% van de subs aangesloten.
Bij Canal digitaal klanten in Europa is dit practisch 0%
SkyItalia loopt op middleware van OPTV waar de aansluiting van het returnpath altijd een must is geweest, daarom kan er met de afstands bediening gewed worden etc.
Liberate heeft helemaal niets met Malone te maken, die bezit ruim 30% van alle aandelen Optv en daarmee ook het stemrecht.
Liberate is gekocht door Comcast en Cox en daardoor zijn die 2 nu met OPTV aan het dealen omdat LBRT niet loopt zonder OPTV patenten.
Microsoft maakt wel gebruik van Optv technologie, de spyglass-mosaic-browser zit in elk windows pakket tegenwoordig, maar of ze gebruik maken van NDS technologie is mij niet bekend.
NDS is net als Optv niet te koop zowel de heren Murdoch en Malone denken er niet over, zou ook een beetje duur worden voor Optv immers NDS maakt $1.78 per aandeel winst en doet momenteel $45,50 per aandeel.
De prijs van het aandeel NDS is wel een richting die OPTV binnenkort ook op gaat
Verder is het logisch dat elke aplicatie die NDS heeft ontwikkeld op alle Murdoch zenders worden uitgerold.

Wat Ronnie hierboven schreef, het belang van Malone in Newscorp, is een reden voor vele speculaties, want meestal worden er dingen geruild en dat kunnen er in dit geval heel veel zijn.
Evenals de mogelijkheid dat Comcast-Cox LBRT alleen maar gekocht hebben om als wisselgeld voor te dienen voor een deal met OPTV.
OPTV was de eerste bieder op LBRT.
Dan hadden ze bijna het alleenrecht gehad in de states voor de kabelaars, als het gelukt was en dat wilde CC niet.
Maar goed voor een flink pakketje aandelen OPTV, wie weet?

Optv werkt(e) soms samen met NDS, dan doet Optv de middleware en NDS de conditionnal acces, echter beiden werken direct voor de MSO.
Als NDS een applicatie aan deze MSO weet te slijten, krijgt Optv daar soms geld voor, afhankelijk van het contract dat OPTV met de MSO heeft, maar meestal is het niet het geval dat Optv er wat voor krijgt.
NDS heeft nooit iets voor OPTV ontwikkeld wel, voor eigen titel applicaties gemaakt die op een Optv platform konden draaien
Optv is nu (nadat NDS Media-Highway had gekocht) partner met Nagravision (kudelski) en ADB, gedrieen bieden ze end to end oplossingen aan bij MSO's.
Ter verduidelijking over mijn verwijzing naar Microsoft, de Spyglass-mosaic-browser werd indertijd voor het belachlijk lage bedrag van $15.000.000 gekocht.(all-inn waren eenmalige baten dus)
Verder had ACTV (inmiddels overgenomen door Optv) met Microsoft een licentie overeenkomst, of daar nog geld uit komt voor Optv is onbekend.
Maar Ik ben reuze benieuwd naar de overeenkomst die NDS met Msft zou hebben, kun je daar iets meer over vertellen?

Microsoft has been in the middleware market for some time, with
products such as WebTV. More recently it launched the Microsoft TV
Platform solutions, including the Advanced and Basic Digital middleware
clients. Basic Digital is based on a strategic alliance, with NDS licensing
its Core middleware to Microsoft. This solution fully supports NDS Open
VideoGuard. NDS is currently developing the Basic Digital client for
Microsoft and is integrating NDS Open VideoGuard into their Advanced
Client.

Under the terms of the letter of intent, Globo Cabo also will become the first cable company to eventually use all the components of the Microsoft TV platform to provide new interactive services, content and features to its cable TV subscribers in Brazil.

"The primary purpose of our trial is to put real interactive TV services in the homes of real subscribers and learn firsthand what features and capabilities are most valuable to them," said Moyses Pluciennik, CEO of Globo Cabo. "The trial will provide us with a fertile proving ground for better understanding the interactive TV marketplace in Brazil before launching these services commercially in other cities."

Microsoft and Globo Cabo will begin an interactive TV trial this month in the city of Sorocaba, which is in the state of S ã o Paulo. During the first phase of the trial, Globo Cabo will use Microsoft TV Basic Digital software to offer new interactive features to a range of subscribers, launching the network operator's Interactive Television Project. In the future, Globo Cabo plans to add other services powered by additional Microsoft TV products, including Microsoft TV Advanced, Microsoft TV Server and Microsoft TV Access Channel Server.

"This trial with Globo Cabo is an important step for Microsoft for several reasons: It is the first deployment of a cable-based interactive TV service in Brazil, it represents the world's first deployment of Microsoft TV Basic Digital, our solution for first-generation digital set-top boxes, and it is the first deployment of Microsoft TV software in Latin America," said Alan Yates, vice president of Microsoft TV sales and marketing at Microsoft. "Our goal is to work closely with Globo Cabo, starting with Microsoft TV Basic Digital and enable a series of new interactive products and services over time."

The trial initially will involve approximately 250 cable subscribers using Samsung digital set-top boxes. After the trial, Globo Cabo plans to commercially launch its interactive TV services. The first Brazilian cable operator to deliver digital television signals to subscribers' homes, Globo Cabo plans to deploy at least 600,000 digital set-top boxes during the next five years.

Globo Cabo and Microsoft TV are teaming with NDS, the leading supplier of open conditional access software and interactive systems for digital pay TV, to take the lead in helping interactive TV change the way people watch television. Through new interactive TV services, viewers will be able to choose among multiple camera angles while watching sporting events, shop at the local supermarket through the television, access electronic banking, check and schedule favorite TV programs using the electronic program guide, and more. In addition, Globo Cabo subscribers will join other users of interactive TV worldwide in experiencing digital-quality audio and video through their set-top boxes.

Special , de datum van dat bericht is van 5 jaar geleden. Naar mijn weten is het nooit van de grond gekomen daar.
"ONLY ONE TAKER. Microsoft has stumbled before. Take interactive TV. In the past three years, the company has invested more than $8 billion in cable companies to secure a spot for its set-top-box software. But after nearly a decade of tinkering with interactive TV, Microsoft's set-top-box software is still hard to find. Only one cable company is using it: Globo Cabo in Brazil, which will begin a trial in 250 homes in Sorocaba later this month."
Verder staat er duidelijk in het bericht dat NDS alleen voor de conditional-acces en wat applicaties zorgde. Tenminste zoals ik lees.

Als je de site van Globo Cabo probeert zie je dat ze tegenwoordig bij Murdoch horen en die heeft echt niets met msft. netbrasil.globo.com/
Msft heeft zich geheel geworpen op IPTV, loopt de deuren van de telcos plat en laat de kabelaars de kabelaar.
Daarom vroeg ik ook of Basic digital voor IPTV was, maar dat is dus niet het geval.

OK. bedankt voor de links. Was inderdaad een bericht uit 2002, dacht dat deze nog gold. Weer wat meer inzage, en de laatste tijd worden de berichten hier ook steeds wat meer inhoudelijk. Zowel met de koers als het forum gaat het dus de goede kant op (zal wel een duidelijke relatie met elkaar hebben!)
