Second UTC for Sheffield appoints BAM to commence construction

6 July 2015 - BAM Construct UK Ltd

Hemel Hempstead, 6 July 2015 - BAM Construction has won a £9.3 million project to create the second University Technical College in Sheffield, for human sciences and computing. The contractor, which has offices in Leeds, will build UTC 2 Sheffield on the Olympic Legacy Park in Don Valley.

BAM is currently on the Park building the Oasis Academy Don Valley. UTC 2 Sheffield will specialise in human sciences and computing, preparing students for employment in two of the key growth sectors in the Sheffield City Region. It will open in September 2016, and hold 600 pupils aged 14 to 19.

Specialist teaching facilities on the ground and first floors of the four-storey building will support the specialisms. A central atrium will create spacious, light, learning environments. Second and third floor terraces and a dining space on the third level will offer excellent views of the Olympic Legacy Park, which will include a community playing pitch for rugby league side Sheffield Eagles, a community basketball arena which will be home to the Sheffield Sharks, the Oasis Academy, the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre and public cycle ways.

UTC 2 Sheffield will source 10 per cent of its energy from renewable sources with Sheffield’s district heating presently being considered. All plant is designed to meet the EFA’s facilities output specification ensuring efficient and robust solutions are provided throughout.

BAM intends to move most of its Oasis Academy team over to the UTC project and to work with many of the same suppliers, including local firms Sothall Roofing, Brebur, Jumbo Partitions and Smith’s Decorators.

Project Director Paul Cleminson said: ‘It is fantastic for BAM to continue our relationships at the Olympic Legacy Park and to contribute more cutting edge facilities for its future.

These will be first class facilities for students to learn critical skills that employers in Sheffield will need. We look forward to working with the local community to maximise the benefits of the project.’

Work is due to start on site in October, with the UTC opening September 2016.

The Sheffield College, Sheffield Hallam University and Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and Industry are working together to deliver UTC 2 Sheffield.

Andrew Cropley, Executive Director, Strategic Planning and Business Development, The Sheffield College, said: ‘We are very pleased to be working with BAM to deliver an extraordinary school for 14 to 19-year-olds. The design makes the very best of the site and will provide an incredible learning environment for our students, with remarkable neighbours. BAM's experience of this site and of building UTCs gives us even greater confidence that our building will be ready to welcome students from across Sheffield and beyond for September 2016.’

UTC 2 Sheffield will provide students with academic qualifications and technical skills for the human sciences and computing sectors. This includes healthcare technology, sports science, exercise medicine and wellbeing, which are all key growth sectors in the Sheffield City Region.

Employers will influence the building design and be central to the curriculum. IT employers including Goldfish Systems, Sero Consulting and Yoomee are also on the board of the UTC, along with Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the city’s rugby league and basketball teams and other private sector partners.

BAM has undertaken a series of major projects in Sheffield in the past decade, including the University of Sheffield Arts Tower, Information Commons Building, Cantor Building and a laboratory rationalisation project for Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The public can find out more about UTC 2 Sheffield at a community event at the English Institute of Sport, Coleridge Road, on Tuesday July 14th from 5.30pm to 7.00pm. For more information and to book a place, go to: www.utc2sheffield.org.uk/

Explosieve stijging hypotheekaanvragen

Prisco Battes
vrijdag 3 juli 2015, 13:50

MILAAN (AFN/DPA) -

PORT FOCUS: Containers, conflict and gas boost Aqaba

Aqaba is positioning itself as a regional hub for two key types of cargo that are seeing sustained growth in the Middle East.

Port of Aqaba is positioning itself as a regional hub for two key types of cargo that are seeing sustained growth in the Middle East: containers and gas, while the recent spread of the ISIS conflict to the Lebanese border with Syria has forced a re-routing of Lebanese cargo through Aqaba to the rest of the Middle East.

This has boosted demand further, but would likely have created congestion within Aqaba Container Terminal (ACT) if it weren’t for a major expansion project undertaken in 2010 and due for completion this year. The US $140-million expansion of the terminal has been conducted in several phases by BAM International that allowed the terminal to remain in operation.

The expansion project will see an additional 200 metres of new quay and the installation of two new Ship-to-Shore (STS) cranes and four Rubber Tire Gantry cranes (RTGs). The redevelopment of the quayside will allow the terminal to handle three of the world’s largest ocean carriers simultaneously and will increase annual capacity to 1.5 million TEU, according to terminal operator APM Terminals, which manages the terminal in a joint partnership with Aqaba Development Corporation (ADC).

This expansion also comes amid strong interest in Aqaba from the Middle East’s leading shipping line, United Arab Shipping Company (UASC), and the world’s largest shipping line, Mearsk. The company’s local office, Maersk Line Jordan in February this year launched the ME5 service, which aims to improve maritime transport networks with the kingdom’s only port, says the company’s regional managing director Anne Gronbjerg.

The new service will directly link the port of Aqaba to the ports of Jeddah, Salala, Djibouti, Colombo and Chennai in the East, in addition to Port Said, Algeciras, Valencia and Genoa in the West.

UASC at the end of May opened a shipping agency in Jordan to be managed in-house. UASC primarily imports food, construction materials and home appliances into Jordan and exports raw materials with three weekly services calling at the country’s Aqaba port, two of which are direct from the Far East. The new agency will provide better service to Jordanian freight forwarders and increase throughput at the port.

Also in late May, the Port of Aqaba made headlines again with the launch of the new LNG terminal and the port’s first shipment of liquefied natural gas from Qatar. Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Ibrahim Saif has predicted that the Aqaba Gas Port and the power generation sector will experience a "quantum leap" that will not only cover Jordan's needs for electricity, but might also result in a surplus that can be exported to Egypt, which suffers a scarcity of gas.

Aqaba directly translated into English denotes a steep path or ascent, it was likely named after the strategic importance of the city when it was founded more than 6,000 years ago at the junction of trading routes between Asia and Africa. It’s true then that some things never change.
