Dear Friends,
Yesterday, the world’s preeminent science journal, Nature, published a paper detailing another breakthrough with the potential to transform the lives of people with spinal cord injury.
As most of you know, we have the privilege to work with a talented and committed group of neuroscientists and neurosurgeons at .NeuroRestore, a research institute based in Lausanne, Switzerland led by Professor G. Courtine and Dr. Jocelyne Bloch.
In this week’s paper, Professor Courtine and Dr. Bloch, in collaboration with .NeuroRestore colleagues and researchers from ONWARD and CEA-Clinatec (Grenoble, France), described how ONWARD ARC Therapy was paired with a wireless brain-computer interface (BCI) to help a paralyzed 40-year-old man walk again with the power of thought. The man was already walking with the benefit of ARC Therapy. The addition of the BCI provided augmented control, allowing him to pause, control his stride length, and traverse more complex terrain such as stairs.
ONWARD and this research consortium plan to implant four people with a BCI in combination with ARC-IM Therapy over the course of the next year to explore the combination’s effectiveness in restoring hand and arm function, and mobility. We are proud to be a leader in this fast-emerging field at the intersection of AI, life sciences, and technology.
Several prominent global news outlets, including the Washington Post, NBC News, ABC News, and BBC covered this groundbreaking achievement.
Please join me in congratulating Professor Courtine, Dr. Bloch, and all of the co-authors of this groundbreaking paper.
Kind regards,
Dave Marver
