Coca-Cola Italia to introduce hydrogen-powered logistics trucks

Hydrogen will soon be powering Cola-Cola HBC Italia’s logistic trucks in a new agreement revealed today (May 19).

This new agreement marks a vital milestone in Coca-Cola’s transition to zero-emission technologies and reducing the carbon emissions of the supply chain.

With the creation of the consortium, consisting of main hauliers Italtrans, Number1, Casilli Enterprise and Favaro Servizi, London-based energy transition adviser Ikigai Capital (IKIGAI) and green energy development company NVA, the parties will aim to decarbonise its road transport operations as part of their 2040 net zero objective.

As part of the agreement, the consortium will aim to create a net zero transport procurement, investment, and implementation project for vehicles, fuels, and related infrastructure.

The first phase of the project will entail a feasibility study to understand the dynamics of road transport for CCHBC and to create Net Zero-aligned alternative solutions including the upstream and downstream infrastructure ecosystem necessary to decarbonise such a hard to abate area for CCHBC.

A pilot project will be developed by the consortium which will include the creation of a multi fuels hub with hydrogen and biogas expected to be central to the development.

Manuel Biella, Director of Italian Supply Chain, said, “We recognise the enormous challenges to achieve net zero emissions in the road transport sector, but we also know that the change is needed now, and we want to be leading the way.

“That’s why Coca-Cola HBC Italia is committed to supporting this project and our hauliers in their decarbonisation journey and invest resources to lead the way and become an example for a sustainable logistics sector.”

Roberto Castiglioni, Co-founder and CEO of Ikigai Capital, said, “We don’t believe there is a silver bullet to decarbonise the transport sector; we believe we need a silver bucket, different solutions for different applications.

“That’s why we believe multi fuel hubs are the answer and we are eager to export our model to Italy with such a forward-thinking client like CCHBC. It’s all about understanding the real-life challenges through data analysis, having a holistic and technology-agnostic approach, while delivering value to all of the project stakeholders.”

Vattenfall en IT Norrbotten vertrouwen op brandstofcellen van Ballard Power

Energieleverancier Vattenfall heeft samen met Ballard Power en IT Norrbotten het eerste brandstofcelsysteem op waterstof in gebruik genomen voor de noodstroomvoorziening van breedbandnetwerken.

De faciliteit, gelegen in de Noord-Zweedse stad Överkalix, zal zorgen voor een ononderbroken werking van breedband en digitale communicatie in het geval van langdurige stroomuitval in koude klimaten.

De technische oplossing bestaat uit de Ballard module FCgen®-H2PM 5.0 kW, die speciaal is ontwikkeld voor de levering van vitale infrastructuur, hulpdiensten, mobiele netwerk operators en glasvezelnetwerken.

Aan het einde van de handelsweek stond het aandeel Ballard Power tegen de slotkoers van de vorige week op 6,54 EUR.

Vattenfall bouwt ’s werelds eerste waterstof producerende windturbine op zee

Vattenfall gaat waterstof op zee produceren in een windmolen. In Schotland krijgt een bestaande operationele turbine een electrolyser, de machine die waterstof maakt. De waterstof wordt met een pijpleiding naar de kust in Aberdeen Harbor gebracht.

AMSTERDAM - Nederland krijgt een groeiend aanbod schone energie. Voor de Noordzee verschijnen in hoog tempo plannen en investeringen voor een aantal eilanden tussen windmolenparken, die windenergie omzetten naar waterstof. Die was altijd erg duur, maar wordt door de extreem hoge gas- en olieprijs aantrekkelijker.

Het Deense Copenhagen Infrastructure Parnters (CIP) meldt zich als volgende. Dit investeringsfonds begint met zijn project BrintØ op de Doggersbank in de Noordzee. BrintØ zou in 2030 jaarlijks een miljoen ton groene waterstof aan wal kunnen afleveren.

Dat gebeurt door de enorme windkracht via de elektrolyse-techniek om te zetten in goed te transporteren waterstof. Die waterstof wordt volgens CIP dan ook aan de industrie in Duitsland en Nederland verkocht.

Op de Noordzee werkt Gasunie met Aqua Ventus H2 aan een groot verdeelstation voor waterstof. Plug Power, een producent van omzetters van de windenergie naar stroom, kreeg deze week de opdracht van H2 Energy Europe voor een omvangrijk station in Denemarken. Zijn machine zou uit windenergie voor de kust schone stroom voor straks 15.000 trucks in Europa gaan leveren.

Knooppunten
Gasunie-topman Han Fennema verwacht deze zomer met uitgewerkte investeringsplannen voor een Nederlands waterstofnetwerk te komen. Tata Steel rekent al op waterstof van de windmolens voor zijn IJmuidense kust om staal te maken. En netbeheerder TenneT onderzoekt nieuwe energie-eilanden, knooppunten met enorme schakelkasten die van daaruit stroom aan wal brengen. Dat is nodig: er komen vijf grote windparken voor de kust.

Op de Noordzee mag energieleverancier Vattenfall aan de Schotse kant beginnen met windmolens die waterstof ver op zee kant-en-klaar kan afleveren voor transport naar de industrie op land.

Om groene waterstof in de havens van Vlissingen, Terneuzen en Gent te leveren zijn Gasunie en de Belgische evenknie Fluxys al begonnen om zestig kilometer leiding gereed te maken voor waterstoftransport. Neptune Energy startte op zijn oude olie- en gasplatform Q13a, tien kilometer uit de Haagse kust, experimenteel met groene waterstof gemaakt met elektriciteit opgewekt door wind en zon. Op de Maasvlakte wordt gebouwd aan een grote elektrolyse-fabriek die over drie jaar 1,3 gigawatt stroom kan leveren.

Gas besparen
Energiebedrijf Eneco sloot zich eind maart aan bij het consortium met Shell, RWE, Equinor en de Gasunie. Dat wil vanaf een mega windeiland energie naar de Eemshaven voor de industrie afleveren. Het moet in 2030 zo’n 4 gigawatt opleveren. Dat bespaart 1,5 miljard kuub gas per jaar.

De Europese Unie claimt met alle plannen in dat jaar 40 gigawatt via elektrolyse aan stroom te kunnen produceren. Al zijn de bedrijven die het moeten uitvoeren voorzichtig over zulke claims. Nederland, Duitsland, België en Denemarken zetten vorige week hun handtekening onder plannen voor 150 gigawatt capaciteit op de Noordzee. Ze stellen dat dit groene stroom voor 200 miljoen Europese huishoudens oplevert.

TNO ontwikkelt ondertussen met het Belgische Bekaert, Johnson Matthey uit het Verenigd Koninkrijk en het Duitse Schaeffler alweer een nieuwe generatie elektrolyser. Die zal veel compacter worden, en een lager elektriciteitsverbruik krijgen. Waarmee de kosten voor productie van waterstof kunnen dalen, stelt Richard Braal, marktdirecteur EnergieTransitie bij TNO.

Dataverzamelaar Bloomberg legde alle plannen naast elkaar. Ze zijn hoopvol, maar onvoldoende. Om straks aan de eisen van de klimaatakkoorden te kunnen voldoen, is in de wereld nog eens het negenvoudige nodig van wat in 2030 afgeleverd gaat worden.

Sumitomo Corporation Andes, a subsidiary of Sumitomo Corporation, one of the world's largest traders and investors in goods and services, together with Promigas, a leading energy distributor and transporter in South America, announced today their intent to collaborate on the development of Hydrogen mobility solutions in Colombia.

The purpose of this agreement is to establish a collaboration between the two companies to assess the opportunities related to hydrogen mobility within the Colombian marketplace. This includes studying and analyzing the market for developing a Proof of Concept, and then analyzing the potential of a commercially viable solution for the transportation and logistics sectors within the country.

Coca-Cola HBC Italia & Ikigai to Cut Transport Emissions

Coca-Cola HBC Italia, the main bottler of The Coca-Cola Company brand products in Italy, announced that it has created a working group composed of the energy transition consultant Ikigai Capital, from the development of green energy NVA and by transporters: Italtrans, Number1, Casilli Enterprise and Favaro Servizi, to decarbonise their heavy vehicles on the road with the aim of becoming a zero-emission company by 2040.

While the ultimate goal is to create a project for the procurement, investment and implementation of zero-impact transport for vehicles, fuels and related infrastructures, the first phase of the project involves a feasibility study to understand the dynamics of transport on road to Coca-Cola HBC Italia and consequently create a zero impact network through alternative solutions, including the upstream and downstream infrastructural ecosystem necessary to decarbonise the affected area.

Ikigai, together with NVA, will carry out a pilot project involving the creation of multi-fuel hubs for the supply of green fuels (including electricity, biomethane and hydrogen) and an ecosystem for the supply of zero-impact vehicles . The involvement of stakeholders (supply, demand, technology suppliers, financiers and governmental bodies) will be crucial given the number of challenges to decarbonise the road transport sector in Italy.

Technip Energies Announces Launch of GO.H2 by T.EN

Technip Energies and its affiliates Kanfa and Inocean have announced the launch of GO.H2 by T.EN, a full suite of carbon-free solutions for green hydrogen production. This suite of solutions, based on renewable power sources such as wind and solar, is flexible with building blocks tailored to meet clients’ needs depending on substructures, hydrogen products and derivatives produced, functionality and locations.

The offshore facility can be a fixed structure or a floater. The green hydrogen is produced using a sea water desalination unit, followed by electrolysis and exported to shore by a transport pipeline or offloaded on a carrier vessel.

For harsher environments, the substructure can be a spar or a semi-submersible. For high capacities and further from shore, the hydrogen is converted by adding ammonia or a Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier unit and transferred to a floating storage and offloading vessel. By adding hydrogen storage and fuel cells, the facility ensures a stable and continuous power supply for electrified oil and gas facilities powered by wind turbines. For smaller capacities, the systems can be located on the floating offshore wind substructure or on the substation.

Intermittency management is addressed from design phase through adequate system architecture and technology bricks, power and hydrogen storage and control strategies. In operations, an energy management system (EMS) enables online production optimization through predictive control models.

PGNiG Inks LoI for Blue Hydrogen Project in Poland

The Polish Oil and Gas Company PGNiG has signed a letter of intent with Ecoglass, Steelworks Pokój and Messer Polska which will participate in the hydrogen project Blue H2. The enterprise is going to develop blue hydrogen production technology and build an initial installation in Zabrze in southern Poland. PGNiG has announced that cooperation with the steelworks industry will enable the use of blue hydrogen technology in industrial steel production. Blue hydrogen is made from natural gas and supported by carbon capture and storage. As a result of the process, a low-carbon hydrogen that produces no CO2 is obtained.

Initially, the "Blue H2" project is going to develop an advanced blue hydrogen production technology and create initial production equipment in the Silesia region. When it proves successful and profitable blue hydrogen is going to be used in production processes in the steelworks industry.

CIP Proposes to Build Hydrogen Island in North Sea by 2030

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners is proposesing to build an artificial island dedicated to large-scale production of green hydrogen from offshore wind called BrintØ, Hydrogen Island, in the Danish part of the North Sea. The island is expected to be able to supply an unprecedented amount of green hydrogen by 2030 and will thus be a crucial step in securing Europe’s future green energy supply. The BrintØ project provides a significant contribution to reaching the ambitious targets set by the Danish government earlier this year.

BrintØ could be a first-of-its-kind. BrintØ and over time other adjacent energy islands will produce very large amounts of green hydrogen from offshore wind for export to nearby countries, e.g. Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium. BrintØ will thus create a foundation for the production of sustainable green fuels via Power-to-X for trucks, ships and aircrafts. BrintØ can become a showcase for Danish competencies within offshore wind, Power-to-X and green energy systems. This will lead to new export opportunities for Denmark, and thus contribute to significant economic growth and local job creation.

BrintØ is envisaged to be established on the Danish part of Dogger Bank; an area expected to become a central hub for the future build-out of offshore energy infrastructure in the North Sea. The area consists of a 20,000 square km sandbank and offers some of the world’s best conditions for producing low-cost green electricity, due to low water depths and strong wind resources. With BrintØ, Denmark therefore has a unique opportunity to secure a strategic role in relation to the expected development of a wide-ranging network of offshore infrastructure, spanning from energy islands to power cables and hydrogen pipelines, across the North Sea’s territorial boundaries.

New hydrogen refuelling station opened in Antwerp, Belgium

Belgium-based Colruyt Group’s energy and fuel suppler, DATS 24, today (May 30), opened its new hydrogen fuel station in Wilrijk, a district of Antwerp, Belgium on the A12.

The Wilrijk station signals the start of five new hydrogen stations in the country, with hopes that more companies will begin to introduce hydrogen-powered cars in it their fleets.

In effort to make hydrogen a viable alternative to fossil fuel-powered transport, DATS 24 plans to open stations in Haasrode and Erpe-Mere, near Brussels, Ollignies, and Herve.

Raf Flebus, Business Uni Manager at DATS 24, said, “The aim of DATS 24 is to make hydrogen available as much as possible for the transport of people and goods.

“Driving on hydrogen is electric driving, with a combination of unique advantages: a quick refuelling, emission-free driving and a guaranteed electric range of 650 to 700 km. All you need is an hydrogen filling station nearby. This is now possible for many companies in this area.”

DATS 24 opened the first integrated hydrogen filling station in Europe in 2018, a its base in Halle, Belgium. The company has partnered with WasterstofNet, a collection of hydrogen industry players in Flanders and the south of the Netherlands.

Adwin Martens, Managing Director of WasterofNet, said, “Acceleration is needed to get society moving towards zero emissions. Green molecules such as hydrogen will play a crucial role in getting everyone on board.

“That is why we have ensured that this DATS 24 hydrogen station, which is indeed a hefty investment, was co-financed within the Hydrogen Region 2.0 programme of Interreg Flanders-Netherlands.”

Plans for 6-GW renewable hydrogen hub shelved in S Australia

May 31 (Renewables Now) - Australia’s Kallis Energy Investments will not put forward its proposal for a massive green hydrogen complex powered by 6 GW of wind and solar capacity in South Australia due to “unacceptable” risks related to water supplies in the region.

The company’s CEO Terry Kallis announced in a social media post last weekend that the ambitious scheme will be discontinued following an environmental assessment.

“That assessment, which was foreshadowed in the original project announcement, has determined that the environmental and permitting risks associated with water supply and desalination were unacceptable,” Kallis said.

The Moolawatana project was initiated at the end of November 2021, calling for the construction of a green hydrogen hub some 570 km (354.2 miles) north of Adelaide, along with 3 GW of solar and 3 GW of wind turbine capacity to power the process. The proposal also included a desalination plant at the site.

The produced hydrogen was planned to be transported to Port Bonython via a dedicated hydrogen pipeline and exported, mainly to Japanese and Korean markets.

The discontinuance of the Moolawatana project will not impact the development of the 5,000-MW Murchison green hydrogen project in Western Australia, Kallis noted, adding that the project is “full steam ahead.” The Aussie investor is working on the scheme through Hydrogen Renewables Australia.

Zuid-Holland opent waterstoftankstation: wat komt hier allemaal bij kijken?

Vanaf 2030 moeten alle circa 5.000 OV-bussen uitstootvrij zijn. Daarom investeren provincies samen met transportbedrijven nu al in batterij-elektrische en waterstofbussen. Maar Zuid-Holland ging een stap verder. In samenwerking met verschillende partijen gaf het een impuls aan de gehele waterstofeconomie in de regio. Hoe pakte Zuid-Holland dit aan en wat kunnen anderen hiervan leren?

Tyseley Energy Park to Host Ammonia to Hydrogen Projects

A consortium led by Gemserv has secured around GBP 6.7 million from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy to deliver the Tyseley Ammonia to Green Hydrogen Project, through the Net Zero Innovation Portfolio Low Carbon Hydrogen Supply 2 Competition. The project aims to design, build, commission, and operate the world’s largest and most efficient ammonia to hydrogen conversion unit of its kind. The demonstration unit is based on innovative technology developed by H2SITE and is located at Tyseley Energy Park, a strategic energy and resource hub in the West Midlands.

The University of Birmingham is proud to support the development of this world-leading ammonia to hydrogen conversion unit at Tyseley Energy Park. Over the past five years we have been working with TEP to drive the decarbonisation of heat, transport, recycling and energy systems across the region and will ensure this project is linked into the many opportunities available at TEP.

The project aims to address these challenges by harnessing technology innovation and well-established ammonia supply chains, and in doing so position the UK at the forefront of an emerging global market. The demonstration unit will deliver 200kg/day of transport-grade hydrogen to an existing and co-located hydrogen refuelling station, equipped to service buses, goods vehicles and passenger cars.

RWE koopt tweede energiecentrale in Eemshaven
Groene waterstof is het doel na deal met Vattenfall.

(ABM FN-Dow Jones) RWE neemt voor 500 miljoen euro de elektriciteitscentrale Magnum in de Groningse plaats Eemshaven over van Vattenfall om de transitie naar waterstof in gang te zetten. Dat maakte het Duitse bedrijf donderdag bekend.

De Magnum-centrale draait op aardgas, maar kan nu al voor 30 procent op waterstof worden gestookt. De moderne centrale heeft een capaciteit van 1,4 gigawatt. Voor 2030 zou de centrale geheel naar waterstof kunnen worden omgebouwd.

"Met deze transactie verwerven we een moderne centrale die klaar is voor waterstof", zei CEO Roger Miesen van RWE Generation. Alle medewerkers gaan mee bij de overname.

RWE wil deze centrale combineren met de bestaande eigen centrale in Eemshaven, die harde kolen en biomassa stookt, met 1.560 megawatt aan capaciteit. Het delen van lokale infrastructuur zal volgens RWE veel voordelen bieden. Ook bouwt RWE in de haven een terminal voor vloeibaar aardgas of LNG.

Bij de twee centrales moet nog een offshore windpark Hollandse Kust West komen, waarop RWE een bod heeft gedaan. Dit windpark biedt 600 megawatt aan elektroliseercapaciteit. Zo wil RWE bijdragen aan het bereiken van de Nederlandse klimaatdoelen.

"Groene waterstof is het cruciale element om de industrie te decarboniseren" , aldus COO Sopna Sury van RWE Generation.

Tenslotte wil RWE ook gebruik maken van mogelijkheden om CO2 op te slaan, de zogenaamde carbon capture storage. Hierdoor zou de Eemshaven uiteindelijk per saldo een negatieve uitstoot krijgen. Er is overheidssteun nodig om dit haalbaar te maken, zegt RWE.

Hoger dan ooit: waterstofvliegtuig haalt record

Voor het eerst vloog een waterstofvliegtuig hoger dan twee kilometer. Het is nog niet bepaald kruishoogte, maar dit record laat zien dat waterstofvliegtuigen steeds meer power krijgen om duurzaam te vliegen. Het record komt ook met een andere mijlpaal: de eerste waterstofvlucht tussen twee commerciële luchthavens.
