More than 140.17€ million will be spent on the University of Lincoln’s Brayford Campus during the next ten years, the institution has revealed.
Described as the “single largest investment programme” ever seen in the city by academics, it will develop top quality new facilities to support skills and innovation in the region.
The University of Lincoln and the European Investment Bank are supplying the finance for the project.
To mark the announcement, the university’s 3D printed robot MARC lit a beacon on June 22, just a matter of weeks after plans for a new ground-breaking science development was also unveiled.
Details relating to the new School of Social Sciences in Wigford Yard were revealed in late May, just one part of wider plans for the Brayford site.
This development was as a direct result of rising student numbers according to the planning documents for the site.
For instance, the number of nursing students rose from 132 in 2009-10 to 559 last year – a figure that is expected to reach nearly 900 by 2018-19.
Numbers of those studying psychology are also on the up, with the university expecting to reach 805 students in the future.
BAM Construction has landed the contract for the social science block – dubbed the Isaac Newton building scheme – to develop new teaching space, laboratories and office space.
A huge lecture theatre is also included in the plans – the proposed 500-seater hall will be the largest on campus when it is completed.
The new building will cover 70,000 square feet, spread across four storeys, and is the latest part of the university’s Brayford Campus Masterplan.
BAM beat both Kier and Galliford Try to the contract for the development. Work is set to get underway in September with a completion date of one year later.
This should mean it is ready for the academic year beginning in 2016, providing a wealth of opportunities for anyone considering the social sciences or other related subjects.
