Before unveiling the V90 Cross Country, Kerssemakers told the audience that the three issues Volvo wants to tackle are emissions, congestion, and accidents. Solutions for each of those goals, he said, will be found in further automating vehicles. “We need to take one step further,” the CEO said, “and that’s why Volvo is so much into the autonomous drive—not for the technology, not to show off.”
“Development of software will be the heart of everything,” he added. In early September, Volvo partnered with Autoliv, another Swedish company that manufactures automotive safety systems. The two companies will work jointly on improving advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and fully autonomous drive. Reuters says the joint venture is slated to begin operations early next year, with a workforce of 200 engineers, which is expected to grow to 600. By the end of 2017, Volvo will begin its Drive Me program, which will test 100 fully autonomous Volvos on the streets of Gothenburg, Sweden, for viability in the general market.
So where is the V90 Cross Country on this technology continuum? Like many in its class, the car will come with a data plan and be compatible with both Android Auto and Car Play.
