A trade win for domestic steelmakers
06.22.2016
A victory for the steel industry today in Washington, D.C. The U.S. International Trade Commission this morning voted unanimously to find that the U.S. steel industry has been injured by imports of cold-rolled steel from China and Japan.
Jim Baske, CEO, ArcelorMittal North America said, “ArcelorMittal is pleased with today’s final ruling regarding anti-dumping and countervailing duty investigations on cold-rolled steel imports from China and Japan. We applaud the work done by the Department of Commerce (DOC) and the International Trade Commission (ITC) to address unfairly traded imports and level the playing field."
The U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC) will now issue antidumping and countervailing duty orders for these two countries. Previously, the DOC found the following margins:
• Japan – 71.35 % Dumping Margin
• China – 265.79 % Dumping Margin; 256.44 % Subsidy Rate
The DOC is expected to issue its final decision with respect to the remaining countries (Brazil, India, Korea, Russia, and the United Kingdom) in July and the ITC will then make a separate injury determination on those countries.
To understand the effect these imports had on the steel industry and on ArcelorMittal, view the testimony made by ArcelorMittal’s Daniel Mull, executive vice president, sales and marketing, during the ITC’s final phase of investigations into imports of cold-rolled steel products on May 24, 2016 here.
