RHS Garden Bridgewater sets opening date
10 Feb 2020,
The long-awaited £30m RHS Garden Bridgewater in Salford is due to open on 30 July this year.
Arcadis is managing the project on behalf of the Royal Horticultural Society, co-ordinating a team of landscapers and contractors.
Bam Construction is on site delivering the 154-acre garden, which is cited as the largest gardening project in Europe.
Delivery of the project marks the first new RHS Garden in 17 years, according to Arcadis.
The first phase includes the restoration of the 11-acre Weston Walled Garden and several further gardens are planned, as well as a Welcome Building, designed by Hodder + Partners, which will feature an events space, learning space, offices, café and shop.

The RHS is hoping to attract around 600,000 to 700,000 visitors to the garden by 2029.
An Arcadis report on Liveable Places was published last month and sets out 10 recommendations on successful placemaking, focusing on the need for development to be pursued collaboratively, with communities, and delivering carbon resilience and construction sustainability.
Arcadis said many recommendations from the report are being put into action at RHS Bridgewater, such as a commitment to sustainability. The Welcome Building will collect rainwater to supply the buildings’ toilets, a borehole aquifer below the site to irrigate the walled garden, a ground source heat pump will provide an energy source for underfloor heating, and a biomass boiler will be installed to heat the garden glasshouses.
