SEMIS ON A TEAR AFTER STRONG QUALCOMM OUTLOOK (1239 EDT/1639
GMT)
Chip stocks are on a tear on Thursday, with the main
semiconductor index approaching a record high after Qualcomm's
strong quarterly report and outlook.
The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index is jumping
nearly 2%, putting it less than 1% away from beating its June 29
record high close.
Qualcomm is surging almost 6% after it reported
quarterly results that beat analysts' expectations. The San
Diego, California company predicted a rise in sales of chips for
5G phones, including Apple's iPhone, and it said it had
mitigated supply shortfalls that have contributed to a global
chip shortage.
"This was a crazy good quarter, as the company crushes it
even in a challenging market with strong demand across virtually
every segment, 5G continues to ramp, and chip margins return to
levels we have not seen in a decade," Bernstein analyst Stacy
Rasgon wrote in a client note.
MaxLinear is up 13% to $48.29 after the maker of
radio frequency chips forecast strong demand.
"While the outlook remains moderated by supply constraints,
MaxLinear sees early stage signs of improvements," Needham
analyst Quinn Bolton wrote in a research note, raising his price
target to $54 from $50.
On the downside, Apple supplier Cirrus Logic is off
2% after its report beat expectations, but failed to impress
investors.
Advanced Micro is advancing 6.5% to a record high,
extending its rally following its report on Tuesday, when it
forecast current-quarter revenue above Wall Street expectations
and pointed to strong demand for its chips used in data centers
and gaming consoles.
Analysts' median price target for AMD has risen to $110 from
$106.50 before the report, compared to the stock's current price
of $104.
Skyworks Solutions , another Apple supplier, is up
2% ahead of its quarterly report after the bell. Chip
manufacturing equipment maker KLA Corp also reports
after the bell, and its stock is up 1%.
