Thank you for joining this call today to discuss the results and progress we've achieved in the first quarter of 2021. Present on this call today, we have Aditya Mittal, our CEO, we have Genuino Christino, CFO and we also have Simon Wandke, Head of Mining.

On our website this morning, we published our results presentation with detailed speaker notes. So as usual in order to be as efficient as possible the intention today is just to have some opening remarks from Aditya and then move directly to the Q&A session. [Operator Instructions]

Finally, I wanted to touch on our capital returns to shareholders. All the hard work we have done in recent years to reposition the balance sheet and optimize our business means that we're in an excellent position to consistently generate and return cash to shareholders.

Fundamentally, there is no change in our capital allocation. Capital allocation remains the same. We remain very focused on delivering consistent returns to shareholders. You know our capital return policy, 50% free cash returned to shareholders.

The company is performing well, it's generating free cash, net debt will come down this year quite significantly as well. It also came down last year.

ik vind het ook goed leesvoer

tijdens het luisteren naar de call, ben je toch geregeld bezig met vertalen in je hoofd waardoor sommige zaken half gemist worden.

zo ook het volgende. schuld is gegaan van 6.4 naar 5.9
aan werkkapitaal is 1.6 geinvesteerd in 1e kw
in dat van mvliex, uitgetypte q&a, blijkt dat 1.0 is seizoensmatig geinvesteerd, deze komt de volgende keer dus niet terug.

kan dan gezegd worden dat als deze seizoensmatige investering er niet was de schuld van van 6.4 naar 4.9 had kunnen gaan

kan iemand hier iets nuttigs over zeggen

Niet echt nuttigs ..... omdat ik de prioriteiten niet ken. Hadden in schuldvermindering kunnen steken (mits er schulden (vervroegd) aflosbaar zijn). Of in andere investeringen, of aandeleninkoop, etc. Overigens een lage schuld is mooi maar hoeft niet heilig te zijn, je kan met schulden wellicht winstgevende investeringen doen en zo gebruik maken van leverage.

Yeah, let me take this one, Aditya. Jack, so you have seen them and we have invested about $1.6 billion in quarter one. We were quite pleased with that performance, as we have been saying, focused on making sure that we retain some of the efficiencies that we have achieved in 2020. Out of the $1.6 billion, I would say that about $1 billion is internally linked to seasonality, as typically in quarter one we increased shipments and that's what you see. Then, of course, there is also a marked element. Prices have moved up, not only our prices but also raw material prices. And then as we move forward and we think about that going forward, as you know, we don't provide a guidance for the year, but I think it's fair to assume that given how the prices have been evolving recently during the quarter and then after the end of -- that we will continue to see prices rising -- realized prices rising. And it's also a fair assumption that we will continue to see some improvements in shipments as we move into quarter two. So, I think, in Q2, we will continue to see an investment in working capital, but at this point, I would say most likely level that we have in quarter one. And then after that, I think it's too early to comment, we will wait to see how the markets evolve.

Zoals ik het lees is van de 1.6 billion working capital 1.0 seasonally en 0.6 marked element (hogere inkoop kosten)..... en dat voor het 2e kwartaal een ong zelfde bedrag (1.6 billion) verwacht mag worden.

Rekening houdende dat ze een hogere output verwachten (oa door heel kwartaal operational Ghent) en de grondstof prijzen in kw 2 alleen maar verder zijn gestegen (geloof ik) valt mij dit niet tegen).

Sorry ik had beter moeten lezen alvorens te reageren.

Volgens mij zeggen ze dat 1.0 billion seizoens gebonden is en 0,6 billion door prijsstijgingen grondstoffen.

Verder zeggen ze niet wat seizoens gebonden bedrag voor 2e kwartaal zal zijn en welke verwachting voor prijsstijgingen kw2, maar verwachten in ieder geval niet dat het totaal van de twee bedragen in kw2 boven de 1.6 billion van kw1 zal uitkomen.

Blijft volgens mij wel positief ALS de productie echt zal stijgen zeker rekening gehouden met NOG hogere inkoop kosten grondstoffen in kw 2 (waarschijnlijk).

Ikzelf “hoop” op een grote vrijval van kapitaal (working capital ??) als begin volgend jaar ILVA gedeconsolideerd gaat worden, als deze vrijgave en de opgespaarde grotendeels naar schulden vermindering zal gaan, kan meer als de vereiste schulden verlaging tot stand komen en zal zeker de credit ratings weer hersteld cq verbeterd kunnen worden.

AM/NS India Starts Feasibility Study for Odisha Steel Plant

PTI reported that ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India along with the Odisha government has initiated a feasibility study for its proposed 12-million-tonne per annum integrated steel plant in the Kendrapara district of Odisha. In an investor presentation, ArcelorMittal said “AM/NS India is developing its longer term opportunities for growth and has signed an MoU with the government of Odisha to explore options for a greenfield integrated steel plant in the Kendrapara district. The company has initiated, in coordination with the government of Odisha: a feasibility study, securing relevant permissions, land acquisition, developing logistics infrastructure and other enabling conditions to plan for the project construction.”

AM/NS India had signed a memorandum of understanding with the Odisha government to set up the Greenfield project in Kendrapara with an investment of INR 50,000 crore in March 2021.

AM/NS India is a 60:40 joint venture company between ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel.

ArcelorMittal NAFTA Q1 Performance Update

ArcelorMittal reported that NAFTA segment crude steel production decreased by 48.0% to 2.2 million ton in Q1 of 2021, as compared to 4.2 million ton in Q4 of 2020 following the sale of ArcelorMittal USA to Cleveland Cliffs on December 9, 2020. On a scope adjusted basis, ie excluding ArcelorMittal USA, crude steel production increased by 5.5% to 2.2 million ton in Q1 of 2021as compared to 2.1 million ton in Q4 of 2020 following the improvement in demand.

Steel shipments in Q1 of 2021 decreased by 39.3% to 2.5 million ton as compared to 4.1 million ton in Q4 of 2020 on account of the sale of ArcelorMittal USA. On a scope adjusted basis, steel shipments in Q1 of 2021 increased by 7.3% to 2.5 million ton as compared to 2.3 million ton in Q4 of 2020 following the improvement in demand. Steel shipments were 54.7% lower in Q1 of 2021 as compared to 5.5 million ton in Q1 of 2020 but stable on a scope adjusted basis.

Sales in Q1 of 2021 decreased by 20.6% to USD 2.5 billion, as compared to USD 3.2 billion in 4Q 2020, primarily due to the decrease in steel shipments offset in part by a 19.1% increase in average steel selling prices.

Operating income in Q1 of 2021 was USD 176 million as compared to USD 1,507 million in Q4 of 2020 and an operating loss of USD 120 million in Q1 of 2020. Q4 of 2020 operating income included a USD 1.5 billion exceptional gain related to the sale of ArcelorMittal USA. Operating loss in Q1 of 2020 included exceptional items of USD 241 million primarily due to inventory related charges recorded due to a weaker steel pricing outlook driven by COVID-19 impacts.

EBITDA in Q1 of 2021 of USD 233 million was higher as compared to USD 108 million in Q4 o 2020, primarily due to a positive price-cost effect and +7.3% higher shipment volumes (on a scope adjusted basis, excluding ArcelorMittal USA shipments from the prior period). EBITDA in Q1 of 2021 was also negatively impacted primarily by disruption in our Mexican operations linked to the severe weather experienced in Texas in February. EBITDA in Q1 of 2021 was slightly lower as compared to USD 247 million in Q1 of 2020 with the impact of the sale of ArcelorMittal USA largely offset by a positive price-cost effect.

Mooi meegenomen dat Duitsland 35mld wil investeren in verduurzaming van industrie, toevallig MT afgelopen twee maanden grootschalige projecten aangekondigd.
