Apple has regained its place among the top five most sold smartphone brands in China despite a slight fall in sales during the third quarter, when it launched a new artificial intelligence-enabled iPhone.
Apple's smartphone sales dropped 0.3% in the third quarter compared with a year earlier, preliminary data from research firm International Data Corp. showed Friday. Its market share fell to 15.6% from 16.1% a year ago, but it snagged the No. 2 spot in IDC's ranking of smartphone sales in China after failing to break into the top 5 in the second quarter of the year.
Apple's new iPhone 16, which was launched in late September with an AI feature, helped boost sales for the quarter.
Upcoming promotions and the anticipated launch of Apple Intelligence will further support sales in China, IDC said.
China's smartphone shipments rose 3.2% to 68.8 million units during the period, supported by a surge in device upgrades, IDC said.
"Despite ongoing economic challenges, consumers are highly motivated to purchase new smartphones after three years of pent-up demand," said Arthur Guo, senior research analyst at IDC.
Local brand Vivo maintained its leading position in the China market while Huawei took third place behind Apple. Chinese tech giant Huawei has been vying for position against its U.S. rival, launching an around $3,000 three-way foldable smartphone just hours after Apple rolled out the iPhone 16 in September.
Huawei has been regaining market share after several years of sanctions that limited its access to advanced chips. It resumed sales of the Mate 60 series phones in China in August 2023. IDC said it has made an impressive comeback, notching four consecutive quarters of at least double-digit growth in sales.
The iPhone 16 was rolled out with an AI feature that caught the eye of consumers, but Apple is still facing rising competition in China from domestic players like Huawei, Vivo and Xiaomi.
The iPhone 16 is expected to help Apple finish the year on a high note and drive momentum at the start of next year, particularly as Apple Intelligence expands into new markets and supports additional languages, said Runar Bjørhovde, analyst at Canalys.'
