US Jobless Claims +16K At 404K In Jun 28 Week; Survey +1K

By Jeff Bater
Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

WASHINGTON (Dow Jones)--The number of idled U.S. workers filing new claims for unemployment benefits rose last week, a government report said Thursday.

Initial claims for jobless benefits increased by 16,000 to 404,000, after seasonal adjustments, in the week that ended Jun. 28, the Labor Department said.

The four-week average of new claims last week increased by 11,250 to 390,500 from 379,250.

Economists surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires forecast a climb of 1,000 new claims for the week ending Saturday.

New jobless claims for the week ending Jun. 21 were revised upward to 388,000. Originally, claims for that week were reported at a seasonally adjusted 384,000.

The Labor Department report Thursday included the total number of workers drawing unemployment benefits in the week that ended Jun. 21, the latest period for which that particular data are available. The number - known as continuing claims - fell by 19,000 to 3,116,000. The unemployment rate for workers with unemployment insurance fell to 2.3% from 2.4%.

On an unadjusted basis, New Jersey reported the largest increase in new claims the week of Jun. 21, at 6,998; there were layoffs in the transportation, warehousing, trade, service, and public administration industries. Pennsylvania had the biggest decrease, at 3,455; there were fewer layoffs in the transportation equipment, transportation, and petroleum industries.
