Volvo Buses Delivers 31 Electric Buses to Bodo City in Norway

European cities continue to future-proof their public transport. Most recently the city of Bodö in the very north of Norway, which has placed an order for a comprehensive package consisting of 31 electric Volvo buses, charging infrastructure and servicing. When the buses become operational in July 2021 they will be the northernmost electric buses in the world, and the first to enter operation north of the Arctic Circle. The transition to quiet and exhaust emission-free electric buses improves the urban environment and dramatically reduces the climate impact of public transport in Bodö. It also marks an important step for reaching Norway’s ambitious climate targets, which among much else stipulate that all city buses in the country shall be able to run emission-free by 2025. The agreement came after a particularly thorough analysis of Bodö’s unusual preconditions for electrified bus operation.

The environmental benefits of bus electrification also open up new possibilities for future urban planning. As emissions and noise disappear, availability can be improved. The buses can operate in sensitive areas in city centres, and bus stops can be built where this was not previously possible, including indoors.

Of the 31 electric buses that make up the order, 17 are of the 12-metre Volvo 7900 Electric model and the remaining 14 are high-capacity Volvo 7900 Electric Articulated buses. These can carry up to 120 passengers. The charging infrastructure will be delivered by ABB.

Other Norwegian cities which like Bodö have chosen the Volvo Buses solution for electrification of public transport are Drammen and Ålesund, and all told Volvo has received orders in Norway for 63 electrified buses in 2020.

Assuming an average lifespan of 200,000 miles, consumers can ensure that 100% of their entire lifetime mileage is powered by clean, renewable energy for only USD 600.

The news comes as more drivers are considering EVs over traditional gasoline-fueled cars, and a majority of Americans support greater development of clean energy such as wind and solar power, Enel X has created JuiceEco to offer more EV drivers a way to power their vehicles with renewable energy, whether or not they can install solar panels at home. Around one-third of Enel X residential electric mobility customers in the US have an onsite solar system and over 60% of recent JuiceBox customers surveyed have expressed demand for RECs. Now, Enel X customers can select how many miles they’d prefer to drive on 100% renewable energy, as they reduce emissions and match their electricity with clean energy.

'Leasewagens in België voortaan alleen elektrisch'

Nieuwe lease-auto's mogen in België vanaf 2025 nog alleen elektrisch zijn. Dat is een van de maatregelen waarmee de beoogde nieuwe regering in België de klimaatdoelstellingen hoopt te kunnen halen.

De voorgenomen vergroening van het wagenpark blijkt in het ontwerp-regeerakkoord te staan waaraan de zeven partijen werken die samen een coalitie willen vormen. Zakenkrant l'Echo citeert donderdagochtend uit het document.

De maatregel is van belang omdat leasewagens in België erg populair zijn door een soepele fiscale behandeling en vaak een onderdeel zijn van het loon. België heeft bovendien de naam zich weinig om het milieu te bekommeren.

De nota van informateurs Egbert Lachaert en Conner Rousseau is verder nog weinig concreet. De informateurs overhandigen maandag hun eindverslag aan koning Filip en de verwachting is dat dan ook bekend is wie de beoogde regering gaat leiden.

De minderheidsregering van premier Sophie Wilmès bestaat precies een halfjaar en zou vandaag opnieuw om het vertrouwen moeten vragen in het parlement. De partijen die een coalitie willen vormen, hebben vorige week afgesproken dat Wilmès kan doorregeren tot 1 oktober.

Foutje: auto's van concurrenten kunnen gratis snelladen bij Tesla

De nieuwste snelladers van Tesla worden geplaagd door een fout in de software. Andere elektrische auto’s blijken er gratis te kunnen opladen, terwijl dat normaal is voorbehouden aan Tesla-modellen.

Wereldwijd melden eigenaren van elektrische auto’s, ook in Nederland, dat zij ineens gratis kunnen opladen bij de Supercharger V3-laadpalen. De Nederlandse ‘Tweaker’ Hachy probeerde het ook en bevestigt tegenover de techsite Tweakers.net dat hij gratis kan opladen. Achter de naam Hachy gaat Maarten Hachmang (oprichter van Laadpastop10.nl) schuil, die ook op Twitter meldt dat hij de afgelopen dagen de Kia e-Niro én de VW e-Golf bij Tesla's Superchargers gratis kon opladen.

Volgens de Amerikaanse website Elektrek gaat het hoogstwaarschijnlijk om een fout, omdat er normaal gesproken een koppeling wordt gemaakt met een Tesla-account, waarmee ook de betaling wordt geregeld. Deze check, die normaal via een ‘handshake’ wordt gecommuniceerd tussen auto en laadpaal via de CCS-kabel, lijkt er nu niet te zijn.

Update
Tesla heeft nog niet op de situatie gereageerd, maar het is aannemelijk dat het gratis opladen met auto's van de concurrentie niet lang zal duren. Mogelijk voert de fabrikant met spoed een software-update door om dit alsnog onmogelijk te maken.

De fout komt overigens alleen voor bij versie 3 van de Supercharger. Bij deze versie begon Tesla met het laden via CCS-laadaansluitingen, waar het dat eerder nog deed met stekkers van Type 2. Tesla plaatste deze zomer de eerste Supercharger V3 in Nederland, waarmee het piekvermogen voor het opladen werd verhoogd naar 250kW. De eerste laadpalen werden toen in Rijswijk (ZH) geplaatst.

Eerst het goede nieuws: de Japanse supersportwagen is compleet elektrisch en valt dus onder de subsidieregeling, waardoor je als zakelijke rijder over de eerste 50.000 euro geen bijtelling betaalt. Het slechte nieuws is echter dat er dan nog 2.850.000 euro open staat, waarover je wel bijtelling moet betalen.

Inderdaad, de Aspark Owl is een 2,9 miljoen euro kostende auto met een 2012 pk sterke aandrijflijn. Het koppel bedraagt maar liefst 2.000 Newtonmeter, de topsnelheid ligt op 400 km/u en de actieradius bedraagt 450 kilometer. En dat alles verpakt in de laagste sportwagen ooit, want het dak van de auto komt met een hoogte van 99 centimeter nauwelijks boven het kruis van de gemiddelde Europeaan uit.

De Aspark Owl weegt 1900 kilo en dat is relatief licht voor een elektrische auto met zoveel vermogen. De oorzaak zit 'm in de koolstofvezel monocoque van slechts 120 kilo. Het bodywork weegt slechts 180 kilogram. De auto wordt binnenkort uitgeleverd aan klanten. Wie de wagen in het echt wil zien, kan volgende week terecht in Engeland op Salon Prive in Woodstock. Supersnel elektrisch tanken voor trucks

Vrachtwagenfabrikant DAF kwam deze week met mooi nieuws. Het Eindhovense bedrijf liet weten dat zijn elektrische vrachtwagen, vooral bedoeld voor stadsdistributie en ontwikkeld samen met de VDL Groep, twee keer zoveel bereik zou krijgen. Tweehonderd kilometer in plaats van honderd. Een logische stap, gegeven de steeds lager wordende prijs van batterijen en het steeds lagere gewicht.

Het hoofd ontwikkeling van DAF, Ron Borsboom, liet zich in een interview ook uit over de toekomst van de zware trucks, die het grootste deel vormen van de productie en verkoop van DAF. Hij pleitte voor het blijvend gebruik van de verbrandingsmotor, die in de toekomst ook direct op waterstof zou kunnen lopen.

De tussenvorm met een brandstofcelsysteem is volgens hem veel te duur. En het volume voor het totale aandrijfsysteem, inclusief de hogedruktanks voor de opslag van de waterstof, is veel te groot om eenvoudig te kunnen worden ingepast in een truckontwerp.

Borsbooms voornaamste twee bedenkingen bij de volledig door batterijen aangedreven truck voor lange afstanden (de ‘40-tonners’) hoor ik vaker: de batterijen zijn te zwaar om voldoende bereik te hebben, en het laden duurt te lang. Daarmee zijn de kosten te hoog vanwege de wachttijd voor de chauffeur. Een snelle uitbreiding van het aantal oplaadstations met voldoend hoog piekvermogen wordt gezien als een niet eenvoudig op te lossen probleem, vanwege de hoge eisen aan het lokale elektriciteitsnet.

Met behulp van stationaire batterijpacks bij oplaadstations hoeft ook het laden van een zware truck niet meer dan 30 minuten te duren

De oplossing is echter binnen bereik, en begint en eindigt met de steeds beter wordende batterij als opslagmedium voor energie. Niet alleen binnen de vrachtwagen, maar vooral ook daarbuiten. Batterijpacks kunnen bij de oplaadstations worden neergezet als buffers. Ze kunnen overdag goedkope energie laden van zonnepanelen en ’s nachts van het net, en kunnen piekvermogens afgeven aan de zware vrachtwagens. Zo wordt de oplaadtijd enorm verkort.

Het batterijenpakket in de vrachtwagen is weliswaar zwaarder dan de huidige aandrijfcomponenten, maar de Europese regelgeving wordt aangepast om een paar ton meer te mogen vervoeren. Met 3000 kilo extra kan een batterijenpakket van zo’n 800 kWh worden gebruikt. Dit komt overeen met een bereik van ruim 400 kilometer. Met behulp van stationaire batterijpacks bij de oplaadstations zijn oplaadtijden van minder dan 30 minuten haalbaar.

Waarom denk ik dat aandrijving met batterijen een belangrijk onderdeel zal worden van de oplossing voor zwaar vervoer? Omdat de totale kostprijs voor vervoer van goederen beduidend lager zal uitkomen. Lager dan dieseltrucks en zeker lager dan met waterstof aangedreven trucks. Immers, nog los van de lagere onderhoudskosten van een elektrische aandrijflijn, is vooral het gebruik van elektrische energie zonder tussenomzettingen het goedkoopst haalbare. Alles hangt af van de batterijtechnologie voor opslag binnen en buiten de trucks, en die toekomst is rooskleurig. De klassieke zorgpunten zullen vanzelf van tafel verdwijnen.

Dutch TNO & Solar Car Innovator Lightyear Extend Collaboration

Leading independent research organization in the Netherlands that focuses on applied science TNO is extending its collaboration with Lightyear; a high-tech start-up company from Helmond, that will launch the first solar-powered car on the market next year. In a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding the two technology innovators agreed to continue to combine resources and extend their global leadership in the field of E-mobility solar solutions. TNO will continue to customize and improve its solar energy technology for mobile applications together with Lightyear, a world leader in innovative and fully sustainable electric vehicles.

To make this happen, researchers at TNO have adapted DSM’s conductive back sheet foil, normally used for rectangular solar panels, in order to produce aerodynamic curved solar components that are more energy efficient, lighter in weight and suitable for volume manufacturing. Improvements to the technology will enable Lightyear to implement it faster in new vehicles and integrate it seamlessly into the vehicle production process. In the new phase of research and development, a great deal of attention is being paid to safety aspects.

Lightyear has recently added the solar technology developed with TNO on Volkswagen and Tesla vehicles. Prototypes have been made with the VW Crafter LCV van and with an integrated sunroof in the Tesla Model 3 sedan. Both vehicles are now being tested on the road. With these vehicles, Lightyear is demonstrating the added value of integrated solar cells in vehicles and is collecting detailed data to improve the performance, safety and lifespan of the PV modules, in collaboration with, amongst others, TNO.

In recent years, TNO and Lightyear have made major progress in the development of integrated solar components for the Lightyear One, partially funded by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency. Lightyear One has a range of 725 kilometres. With integrated solar, it recharges itself both when it is parked and when it is on the move. The prototype was presented last summer.

Daimler Trucks & Buses Electric Vehicles Cross 7 Million Kilometers Mark

Daimler Trucks & Buses celebrated another milestone on the road to the electrification of its vehicle portfolio with customers worldwide covering more than seven million kilometers with battery-powered, locally CO2-neutral trucks and buses. Positive customer feedback and findings from intensive practical tests with electric trucks from Mercedes-Benz, FUSO and Freightliner show that the electrification of road freight transport is already feasible today. In addition, the electric city bus Mercedes-Benz eCitaro is already in series production since 2018 and in customer use in various European cities. As part of its electrification strategy, Daimler Trucks plans to offer electric vehicles in all its main sales regions by 2022: from the FUSO eCanter in the light-duty segment, the Freightliner eM2 in the medium-duty segment, and the Mercedes-Benz eActros and the Freightliner eCascadia in the heavy-duty segment.

Mercedes-Benz Trucks was the world’s first manufacturer to present a heavy-duty electric truck at the IAA Commercial Vehicles Show in 2016. With the all-electric eActros truck, Mercedes-Benz Trucks is demonstrating that heavy-duty distribution transport for urban areas can already be locally emission-free. The eActros, which has a range of approximately 200 kilometers, has been proving its worth as a locally CO2-neutral alternative for urban distribution transport in a wide range of practical applications with various customers in Europe since 2018. Series production is scheduled to start in 2021.

The first practical applications of the Mercedes-Benz eEconic low-floor truck, which is based on the eActros, were announced in 2020 and are planned for next year. Series production is scheduled to start in 2022. The eEconic is mainly used as a waste-collection vehicle in urban waste-management. This is very suitable for battery-electric trucks due to the comparatively short and planned routes of about 100 km with a very high proportion of stop-and-go operation.

The light-duty FUSO eCanter had its world premiere in September 2017 and is being delivered to numerous customers worldwide. This all-electric light-duty truck is FUSO’s answer to the public need for locally emission-free trucks for light urban distribution traffic. As part of a small series, more than 170 FUSO eCanter light-duty trucks are already in use with numerous customers in Japan, the United States and Europe, and more of them will be handed over successively. The range of the 7.49-ton truck of 100 kilometers reliably covers the requirements of customers in urban distribution transport. With a fast charger, the charging time can be reduced to about one and a half hours. The eCanter is produced in Kawasaki, Japan and in Tramagal, Portugal.

In the United States, the heavy-duty eCascadia and the medium-duty eM2 were premiered in Portland in June 2018. Both electric trucks are currently undergoing practical tests with customers in the United States. The test fleet comprises 38 vehicles in a variety of applications including regional and local distribution, food distribution and parcel delivery. The vehicles have a target range for series production of up to 370 km (eM2) and up to 400 km (eCascadia). Series production of the eCascadia is scheduled to start in mid-2022 and of the Freightliner eM2 in late 2022.

With the all-electric Mercedes-Benz eCitaro Daimler Buses has been offering a locally emission-free city bus for environmentally friendly public transport in cities and metropolitan areas since 2018. The eCitaro is based on the Citaro urban bus which has proven itself time and again. It is the first and only fully-electric urban bus to be developed and manufactured in Germany. With its many features, from its elegant design to its exemplary thermal management which minimises energy consumption and its friendly yet functional passenger compartment, the eCitaro is a truly impressive vehicle. The urban bus celebrated its world premiere as a solo vehicle two years ago.

Stena gives Volvo Bus Batteries a Second Life

The commercial service lives of bus batteries are significantly extended and natural resources are conserved. That is the result of a new cooperation between Volvo Buses and Stena Recycling subsidiary Batteryloop. After the batteries are removed from Volvo’s buses, they are reused as energy storage units for a number of years, for instance in buildings and charging stations. Bus batteries are used for many years in regular traffic before they need to be replaced. However, when new batteries are fitted to the vehicle, the old ones still have considerable capacity left to offer. This capacity is too limited to efficiently propel a bus, but it is more than sufficient for static use for energy storage purposes. Repurposing the batteries means that natural resources can be conserved since it is not necessary to use new batteries for energy storage.

The new recently signed agreement has a global reach. It covers all the batteries for which Volvo Buses is responsible in its electric buses the world over. To date most of these buses are to be found in Europe, but the number of electrified buses is expected to increase in other parts of the world too.

The demand for local energy storage units is expected to increase in the future. Not least, an energy storage unit offers new scope for storing renewable energy, which can be used to meet peaks in electricity demand. Any surplus can be sold, delivered straight into the grid.

Tesla gaat krachtigere én goedkopere accu's maken

FREMONT (AFN/RTR) - Tesla-topman Elon Musk heeft nieuwe accu's voor zijn elektrische wagenpark in het vooruitzicht gesteld die krachtiger zijn, langer meegaan en maar de helft kosten in vergelijking met de huidige accu's. Dat maakte Musk bekend tijdens het evenement Battery Day in Fremont, waar hij in een soort drive-in-setting de aandeelhouders gezeten in Tesla 3's toesprak.

De nieuwe grotere cilindervormige accu's, de 4680 genoemd, zullen vijf keer meer energie leveren, zes keer meer vermogen hebben en voor 16 procent meer bereik zorgen, vertelde Musk. "We hebben nog geen betaalbare auto. Daar werken we aan voor de toekomst. Maar we moeten de kosten voor de accu's terugbrengen."

Tesla gaat de nieuwe accu's produceren in een nieuwe fabriek in de buurt van de fabriek in Fremont in Californië, die tegen het einde van 2021 een geplande productie van 10 gigawatt uur per jaar moet bereiken. Tesla heeft nu samen met partner Panasonic een productiecapaciteit van 35 gigawatt-uur in de 'gigafabriek' voor accu's in Nevada.

Betaalbare elektrische auto

Musk zei verder dat de betaalbare elektrische auto van 25.000 dollar (21.400 euro) nog drie jaar op zich laat wachten. "Het is altijd onze droom geweest", zei hij. "We zijn ervan overtuigd dat we over drie jaar een betoverende elektrische auto van 25.000 dollar kunnen maken, die ook nog eens volledig zelfrijdend is."

Hoewel Tesla een groei van 30 tot 40 procent in de bestellingen kent dit jaar en verwacht in 2020 36 procent meer auto's te verkopen dan in 2019, zakte het aandeel in de aanloop naar 'Battery Day' al 5,6 procent. De berichten van Musk dat de productie van de nieuwe goedkopere accu's en van de betaalbare elektrische auto nog enkele jaren op zich laat wachten zorgde ervoor dat Tesla nabeurs nog eens 6,9 procent zakte.

'Laadpalentekort neemt toe, veel publieke palen overbelast'

AMSTERDAM (AFN) - In Nederland is er een groeiend tekort aan laadpalen. Verder zijn veel publieke laadsystemen overbelast. Dat concludeert Enpuls, een onderdeel van netbeheerder Enexis dat zich specifiek bezighoudt met de energietransitie, na onderzoek.

Van de 13.208 buurten in Nederland zijn er volgens Enpuls bijna 5000 voorzien van publieke laadinfrastructuur. In die buurten woont ongeveer 70 procent van de Nederlandse bevolking. Het is volgens de onderzoekers de vraag of elektrische rijders daar terecht kunnen bij een openbare laadpaal. In ruim een derde van buurten grijpen automobilisten steeds vaker mis.

Volgens Enpuls is sprake van scheefgroei tussen het aantal verkochte elektrische voertuigen en het aantal geplaatste publieke laadpalen. De meeste gemeenten plaatsen pas nieuwe laadpalen als autobezitters daar om vragen. En dat doen ze lang niet allemaal, aldus de onderzoekers. Volgens Enpuls is de aanwezigheid van voldoende laadpunten voor particulieren een belangrijke voorwaarden om elektrisch te gaan rijden.

Enpuls verwacht dat in 2025 elke Nederlander elektrisch wil rijden en dat alle nieuw verkochte auto’s elektrisch zijn. Volgens de onderzoekers moet het laadpaalnetwerk snel en slim worden uitgebreid. De regie daarvoor ligt bij gemeenten. Verder pleit Enpuls voor het opladen van auto's met duurzame stroom.

BMW Group Plant Leipzig to Start Battery Module Production in 2021

The BMW Group is further expanding its Germany based production capacities for electric drives. From 2021, the Leipzig plant will also produce battery modules for the high-voltage batteries of the BMW Group’s electrified vehicles. By 2022, the company is investing more than 100 million euros in the site to prepare for the steadily increasing sales of electrified vehicles, strengthening its role as a pioneer in e-mobility. The Leipzig site is the e-mobility pioneer among the BMW Group’s plants: As the production site of the BMW i3, the BMW Group’s first all-electric vehicle, it has been involved in electric mobility since 2013.

The production process for high-voltage batteries consists of two main steps: First, the battery cells are tested and then assembled into larger units, the battery modules, in a highly automated process. The BMW Group procures the battery cells from partners who produce them according to the BMW Group’s precise specifications. The BMW Group uses different battery cells, depending on which one provides the best characteristics for the relevant vehicle concept.

The battery modules are then mounted into an aluminum casing along with the vehicle connectors, control units and cooling units. The size and shape of the aluminum casing as well as the number of battery modules used vary depending on the vehicle variant. The result is a high-voltage battery ideally adapted to the vehicle.

This combination of standardized battery modules and casings flexibly adapted to the vehicle has several advantages: Firstly, it ensures uniform properties and quality standards in the production of the high-voltage batteries. Secondly, the modular design of the high-voltage battery serves as the basis for a wide range of e-drive variants. Last but not least, this modular approach is a crucial prerequisite for being able to respond quickly to customer demand and take advantage of cost savings.

To date, the high-voltage batteries for all electrified vehicles of the BMW and MINI brands have been produced at the three in-house battery production facilities in Dingolfing/Germany, Spartanburg/USA and Shenyang/China. The new battery module production at BMW Group Plant Leipzig will join this network from 2021 onward.

ABB Charging Solutions for Dongfeng Honda’s EV models

ABB chargers are helping an electric vehicle assembly line in China guarantee the charging performance of up to 120,000 EVs a year. The AC and DC chargers have been supplied to Dongfeng Honda, a joint venture between China’s Dongfeng Motor Group and Japan’s Honda Motor Company, to support final factory inspection of its best-selling models. The ABB units have been installed in the electric vehicle assembly line allowing each EV to be test-charged before leaving the factory. They will also establish that every car can correctly receive both an AC and a DC charge. The plant, located in the Wuhan Economic and Technological Development Zone, in China’s Hubei Province, mainly produces Dongfeng Honda’s best-selling models and the more than 980,000 square meter large site will help the company meet surging demand in China for EVs.

A range of ABB chargers have been selected for use throughout the assembly line, chosen based on Dongfeng Honda’s previous experience with ABB’s low- and medium-voltage distribution products. Standard 60kW Terra 63Z DC chargers and EVinn 7kW AC chargers have been installed on the car inspection line and fault analysis area. In the tighter confines of the inspection line, the smaller 120kW 2 in 1 Terra 124Z DC charger is used.

Mack LR Electric Truck Starts Service with New York Sanitation

Mack Trucks has turned over the keys to its highly anticipated Mack LR Electric demonstration model to New York City Department of Sanitation officials, who will put it through rigorous, real-world trials. DSNY will base the Mack LR Electric demonstration model at its Brooklyn North 1 garage and conduct an in-service trial on local collection routes, evaluating operating range, payload capacity, regenerative braking and overall functionality of the electric refuse vehicle in their operations.

Featuring a copper-colored Bulldog hood ornament to represent the fully electric drivetrain, DSNY’s Mack LR Electric demonstrator features two 167-kW motors, offering a combined 536 peak horsepower and 4,051 lb.-ft. of torque available from zero RPM. The vehicle is equipped with a two-speed Mack Powershift transmission and Mack proprietary S522R 52,000-lb. rear axles. The truck features four NMC lithium-ion batteries (Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide) that are charged via a 150kW, SAE J1772-compliant charging system. All accessories on the Mack LR Electric model, including the hydraulic system for the Heil Durapack 5000 refuse body, are electrically driven through 12V, 24V and 600V circuits.

DSNY is the world’s largest municipal sanitation department, with roughly 12,000 tons of refuse and recyclables collected each day by more than 6,000 vehicles. Their collection fleet is comprised predominantly of Mack vehicles.

Mack unveiled the DSNY LR Electric demonstrator in May 2019 and demonstrated the vehicle to DSNY officials in January 2020 at the Mack Customer Center in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Volvo Penta Powered Electric Fire RT Trucks Launched in Austria

Volvo Penta has developed an electric driveline for leading fire service vehicle manufacturer Rosenbauer’s pioneering fire truck, named Revolutionary Technology. The truck, which features groundbreaking drive technology, vehicle architecture, operability and connectivity, was officially launched at an event in Austria. The RTs will now be sent to fire departments in Berlin, Amsterdam and Dubai to begin real-world customer testing.

By walking away from conventional commercial vehicle concepts and developing an electric solution for the truck’s driveline, Volvo Penta and its customer Rosenbauer have introduced a completely new vehicle architecture which is set to transform the fire service industry. With its electric driveline, the fire truck boasts excellent ergonomics, functionality, and safety, as well as high loading volumes, compact dimensions and one-of-a-kind agility. The Volvo Penta electric driveline also brings benefits such as zero exhaust emissions and significantly reduced noise levels.

Firefighters responding to a call need a vehicle capable of high speed, rapid acceleration, hard braking and maneuverability. The RT’s electric driveline, paired with independent suspension and a hydropneumatic chassis, delivers a high standard of safety and great driving performance.

The Volvo Penta-powered RT features two electric motors that have the potential to provide a total output of up to 360 kW (490 HP) and up to 50,000 Nm for all wheels. The truck’s energy storage system allows for an electricity-powered journey with ample time for operation at the rescue location. In addition, there is a backup diesel engine on board, providing sufficient energy supply should the journey or operation take longer.

As part of the Volvo Group, Volvo Penta leveraged proven technology and competence from Volvo Trucks and Volvo Buses, and adapted it to meet the performance requirements of a fire service application. The result is a proven Volvo Group technological solution that is tailored to meet Rosenbauer’s specific needs.

Eerste elektrische Mazda: MX-30 is niet bedoeld voor de kilometervreter

Mazda, het merk dat de rotatiemotor een warm hart toedraagt, dat een innovatief verbrandingsprincipe voor een personenautomotor heeft ontwikkeld dat het midden houdt tussen een diesel en een benzinemotor, het merk dat modellen met een hybride aandrijflijn levert en zelfs aan zescilinders werkt, komt nu eindelijk met een elektrische auto, de MX-30. Overtuigend? Dat valt te bezien.

Het succes van een EV staat of valt met de actieradius en de laadsnelheid. Verbeteringen op dat gebied zijn aan de orde van de dag. Kwam een elektrische auto een paar geleden niet veel verder dan een kilometer of 200 en werd er met minder dan 7 kW geladen, inmiddels is 11 kW laadvermogen en een rijbereik van minimaal 400 kilometer heel gewoon. Behalve bij de Mazda.

De Japanners gooien het over een heel andere boeg. Mazda gebruikt de totale CO2-uitstoot vanaf de ontwikkeling van de auto tot en met het daadwerkelijke gebruik als argument om nu met de MX-30 op de markt te komen. Die heeft amper 200 kilometer actieradius en laadt met maximaal 6,6 kW bij een thuislader of met maximaal 50 kW aan een snellader.

Het zogenaamde well to wheel, oftewel van de bron tot aan het gebruik, daar gaat het bij Mazda om. Want, zo stellen de Japanners, bij de ontwikkeling en productie van een accu komt een forse hoeveelheid CO2 vrij, dus als je een kleine accu ontwikkelt en bouwt, is de uitstoot lager. Dat de consument vervolgens wordt opgezadeld met een auto die hoofdzakelijk voor lokaal gebruik inzetbaar is, valt blijkbaar onder het kopje ‘bijzaak’.

Om de accucapaciteit van 35,5 kWh in de MX-30 in perspectief te plaatsen: de accu van de meest recente Volkswagen e-Up komt aan 36,8 kWh. Met 4,40 meter is de MX-30 echter bijna van het formaat Volkswagen Golf. Deze Mazda MX-30 is dus duidelijk een ander type elektrische auto dan bijvoorbeeld een Hyundai e-Niro, een Volkswagen ID.3 of een Volvo XC40 Recharge.

De verschillen zijn uiteraard ook terug te vinden in de prijs. De accu van een elektrische auto is de duurste component van een elektrische auto, dus een auto met een relatief compacte accu heeft automatisch een wat sympathiekere prijs. Mazda vraagt 33.990 euro voor de MX-30 First Edition, da’s een stuk minder kostbaar dan de eerder genoemde concurrenten. Als berijder van een First Edition hoef je je niet bekocht te voelen, met tal van rij-assistentiesystemen waaronder een radargestuurde cruisecontrol, verkeersbordherkenning, parkeersensoren, een alarmsysteem, Apple CarPlay, een navigatiesysteem, een uitgebreid multimediasysteem en stoelverwarming. De werkwijze van Mazda is helder: veel waar voor een min of meer vriendelijke prijs, en dat moet dan de beperkte laadsnelheid en matige actieradius compenseren of misschien zelfs verhullen.

Fijn rijdende auto
Voordeel van een elektrische auto met een compacte accu is dat het rijklaargewicht niet extreem uit de hand loopt. Bovendien heeft Mazda in de MX-30 een rijkarakter gecreëerd dat nog wat lichtvoetiger aanvoelt dan de daadwerkelijke 1620 kilo wagengewicht. Hij rijdt als een Mazda, dus met enige beleving in de besturing en in het onderstel, zonder het algehele comfort ernstig te beïnvloeden. Een fijn sturende auto, waarvan je als liefhebber van autorijden gewoon een beetje vrolijk wordt.

Daar komt bij dat Mazda zich heeft overtroffen waar het de inrichting en de bouwkwaliteit van het dashboard betreft. De prachtige materialen passen perfect in elkaar, het oogt allemaal fraai en zelfs de tegenwoordig ‘verplichte materialen’ van gerecyclede componenten zijn gebruikt; het ultieme middel om de aanwezigheid van de auto goed te maken. Hergebruikt kurk en kunststof van petflessen vormen het excuus in de MX-30. Waarbij het leuk is om te weten dat Mazda exact honderd jaar geleden als onderneming startte, destijds onder een andere naam, met de productie van onder meer kurk.

Suicide doors
Mazda zou Mazda niet zijn als het niet wat typische designelementen had toegepast in de carrosserie van de MX-30. Neem de kleurstellingen: de gehele onderkant van de auto, van voorspoiler, wielkuip, onderste deel van de deuren tot de achterbumper, is in een contrasterende kleur uitgevoerd, net als het dak en de raamstijlen. Zowel in de koplampunits als aan de achterkant zijn ronde elementen aangebracht, die voor herkenning zorgen.

Het meest in het oog springend zijn de suicide doors, oftewel aan weerszijden een deur die naar achter toe opent. De eerste serie van de oer-Fiat 500 had dergelijke voordeuren, en Rolls-Royce hanteert de constructie nog steeds, omdat het de toegang tot de auto vergemakkelijkt. In de MX-30 openen de voordeuren op de gangbare wijze, de achterdeuren klappen naar achteren. Leuk gedaan, bovendien stap je relatief eenvoudig achterin, waar de ruimte niet overweldigend is. Een dergelijke deurconstructie is overigens niet zo handig als je aan beide zijden wat krap geparkeerd staat en er vier personen moeten uitstappen.

Op papier levert de Mazda 145 pk, in de praktijk voelt hij niet vreselijk snel aan. Toch weet de MX-30 te overtuigen met zijn rijkarakter, het stille interieur, de prima bouwkwaliteit en zijn vrolijke uiterlijk. Hij is bedoeld voor de automobilist die weet dat zijn of haar dagelijkse mobiliteitsbehoefte beperkt is, en die misschien zelfs wel een uitwijkmogelijkheid heeft naar een auto die wel over een ruime actieradius beschikt. De auto voor erbij of de auto voor regionaal gebruik, dat is deze MX-30.

Mazda realiseert zich dat goed, want een versie met range extender is in de maak. Een range extender is een soort stationair draaiende motor die vloeibare brandstof verbruikt, in het geval van de Mazda benzine of plantaardige olie. De verbrandingsmotor wekt via een dynamo stroom op, voor het geval de accu eerder leeg is dan er een laadpunt is gevonden. Een soort reservemotortje dus. BMW hanteerde dit principe in de i3. De kans dat deze versie van de MX-30 naar Nederland komt, is verwaarloosbaar. Een auto met een dergelijke aandrijflijn valt niet in de categorie waar financiële of fiscale voordelen voor zijn en daardoor zou deze variant te duur worden, wat hem onverkoopbaar maakt.

Audi Electrifies FC Bayern Munich

Enabled by the partnership with Audi, FC Bayern Munich is the first international football club to drive using electric power. The stars of the Champions League winner received their Audi e-tron models in Munich and are immediately ready to go: Audi has already installed the charging points for the electric fleet at Bayern’s training grounds on Säbener Strasse.

In January, FC Bayern Munich and Audi had extended their partnership until 2029 even before the previous agreement expired. Among other things, the agenda includes the strategic collaboration in innovative marketing concepts and electrification. An important milestone has now been marked: The handover of a total of 19 Audi e-tron cars to the players means that more than half of FC Bayern’s Audi fleet is electrified. As a result, the club reduces its fleet consumption to less than 95 grams of CO2/km and thus makes an important contribution to sustainability.

Due to corona, the vehicle handover in 2020 did not take place at the Audi Piazza in Ingolstadt. In recent years, this event always marked a highlight especially for the children of the Audi workforce since the little ones are often the biggest fans.

Head Coach Hansi Flick and Bayern’s stars around team captain Manuel Neuer and top scorer Robert Lewandowski received their cars at the Audi training complex at the Munich airport. Immediately following a brief orientation about the digital functional features of the e-tron, the Champions League winners took part in an Audi driving experience in their new models.

Audi has been partnering with the most successful German football club since 2002, plus the brand with the four rings has been a shareholder of FC Bayern München AG since 2011. After winning the German Championship, the DFB Cup and the Champions League, FC Bayern kicked off the new season in a meeting with FC Schalke 04 on Friday night.

‘Elektrisch rijden goedkoper dan op benzine of diesel’

Elektrische middenklassers zijn definitief voordeliger dan auto's die rijden op benzine of diesel. Dat meldt Leaseplan op basis van zijn jaarlijkse autokosten-index, waarin de werkelijke kosten van een auto worden berekend.

Bij het onderzoek worden alle kosten meegenomen, inclusief brandstof, afschrijvingen, belastingen, verzekeringen en onderhoud. Leaseplan deed onderzoek in 18 Europese landen. Daaruit blijkt dat de kosten van elektrische voertuigen dalen en dat er een sterke markt is voor tweedehands elektrische auto’s van hoge kwaliteit.

In de index zijn de kosten ‘gemiddeld’ over de eerste vier jaren van bezit, waarbij wordt uitgegaan van 30.000 gereden kilometers per jaar. Uit het onderzoek blijkt dat elektrische auto's ‘kostenconcurrerend’ zijn. Dat betekent dat ze goedkoper zijn, of niet meer dan vijf procent duurder dan hun tegenhangers op benzine of diesel.

Elektrische auto's zijn voordeliger in 14 landen, te weten: Oostenrijk, België, Denemarken, Frankrijk, Duitsland, Ierland, Italië, Nederland, Noorwegen, Portugal , Spanje, Zweden, Zwitserland en het Verenigd Koninkrijk. Uit het rapport bleek verder dat de gemiddelde maandelijkse kosten voor autorijden enorm variëren in Europa: van 491 euro per maand in Hongarije tot 926 euro per maand in Zwitserland.

Nobina Orders 106 BYD Electric Buses

Leading electric bus manufacturer BYD has entered the Finnish bus and coach market for the first time after securing major orders with Nobina, one of Finland’s and Scandinavia’s largest Public Transport Operators. A total of 106 various BYD models will comprise 64 units for Nobina services in Helsinki and 42 units for Nobina’s operation in Turku, together representing the largest ever order for eBuses in Finland. The announcement also signals a ‘triple landmark’, with Nobina becoming the first PTO in Europe to order BYD’s latest 15-metre three-axle low-floor eBus model. A total of 42 of the new vehicles will go into service on Nobina’s operation in Turku, on Finland’s south-west coast, in the summer time 2021. The new 15-metre model from BYD offers a 47+3 seating capacity and delivers a single-charge range of 400km under SORT 2 test conditions.

After five years operating the pure-electric BYD brand, Nobina has racked-up over seven million ‘electric kilometres’, equal to reducing its CO2 emissions by approximately 7,500-tonnes. The figures make a significant contribution to helping reverse climate change, and highlight BYD’s and Nobina’s commitment to delivering a sustainable transport solution.

Nobina’s fleet order for its Helsinki operation, with deliveries to begin in 2021, includes 20 BYD 12-metre low-floor models and 44 BYD 18-metre articulated models.
