If you're an outdoor fitness enthusiast, TomTom's wearable technology might be your new favourite toy. With more features than a Swiss army knife, this may be the most advanced bit of technology I've ever worn on my wrist. Its heart rate function even gives you a score based on how fast your heart rate recovers.
The watch makes monitoring your fitness easier, more accurate and takes out the guesswork. The New England Journal of Medicine has said that if your heart rate doesn't recover within a minute, it's a sign of poor fitness. So having a good indicator of this effect on your wrist is a very good thing.
Secondly, in terms of monitoring your progress it's been fitted with a "shadow" capability which allows you to compete against your past ten performances and see in real-time whether you're improving. It's not absolutely essential for recreational athletes, but it could be the most used aspect of the TomTom for those of a competitive nature.
The TomTom's built-in altimeter also shows terrain distance during run, cycle, freestyle or hiking activities in the mountains. That's especially important in mountainous areas - during an ascent on a bike for example - as there's a significant difference in horizontal distance travelled on flat ground and the distance covered when cycling uphill.
Speaking from experience: I want to know the exact distance I've covered so my training isn't in vain, and the TomTom Sports Watch provides that capability.
