German onshore wind power prices up again in latest tender

Germany's network regulator has agreed to raise the price it pays for onshore wind power in its latest capacity auction, the second time it has done so under new rules with make it harder for non-corporate players to compete. The average price awarded by the Bundesnetzagentur to onshore wind projects was 5.7 euro cents per kilowatt hour (kWh), up from 4.7 euro cents per kWh in its last auction in February.

In the past, BnetzA's auctions favoured citizens' co-operatives over big commercial players to raise acceptance for wind power technology, often the subject of controversy in affected regions.

Winners of the auction include German utility EnBW , project company PNE Wind and wind turbine maker Enercon.

BnetzA said it had accepted 111 bids for a combined volume of 604 megawatts.

Luxcara opens 111.2MW wind farm in Norway

Power Technology reported that Germany’s asset management company Luxcara has officially opened a wind farm comprising 33 turbines in Egersund, Norway. The new farm has the capacity to generate 111.2MW of clean energy, and is expected to strengthen Norway’s commitment to reduce the country’s emissions by 40% by 2030.

Luxcara managing partner Dr Alexandra von Bernstorff said that “Opening the Egersund wind farm on schedule demonstrates how important it is to us to respect the needs of the various stakeholders. It is eminently important to us that our financial commitment achieves a positive social and ecological effect. We would be pleased to partner with Norwegian institutional investors as well when we invest in renewable energy and infrastructure in the future.”

In December 2015, Luxcara acquired Egersund wind farm with an objective to create a renewable-energy portfolio for institutional investors. At that time, it was still in the development stage.

The investor pool comprises institutionals, which aim to achieve a reliable return with clean technologies, and thus with renewable energy.

A 15 year power purchase agreement was already signed with the Axpo Group in Switzerland in November 2016.

As part of its commitment to the local environment, Luxcara created new walking paths in the vicinity of the wind farm.

11 turbines installed at the Aberdeen Offshore Wind Farm

Energy Digital reported that the final wind turbine has been installed at the Aberdeen Offshore Wind Farm, located three miles from the Aberdeenshire coast in the North Sea. The 11-turbine farm, also known as the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre will have a total capacity of 93.2MW.

The power plant features nine 8.4MW turbines, and two 8.8MW turbines – the most powerful in the world.

The turbines are set to produce enough energy that the farm could power 70% of Aberdeen’s domestic electricity demand.

The turbines are also anticipated to offset 134,128 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year once power is generated in the summer.

The EOWDC faced legal issues as the President of the United States, Donald Trump, argued the farm would spoil the view of his favourite golf course.

Mr Adam Ezzamel, Project Director at Vattenfall said that “This is a magnificent offshore engineering fear for a project that involves industry-first technology and innovative approaches to the design and construction.”

“Throughout construction, the project team and our contractors have encountered, tackled and resolved a number of challenges. The erection of the final turbine is a significant milestone, and with the completion of array cable installation, we now move on to the final commissioning phase of the wind farm prior to first power later this summer.”

“One of our 1,800 tonne suction bucket jacket foundation was installed in what we believe is a world record two hours and 40 minutes from the time the installation vessel entered the offshore site until deployment was complete.”

“What makes this even more significant is that the EOWDC is the first offshore wind project to deploy this kind of foundation at commercial scale while its also the first to pair them with the world’s most powerful turbines.”

Wind turbine catches fire during thunderstorm in Cambridgeshire
Power News - Published on Fri, 01 Jun 2018

Telegraph reported that an 89 meter (292ft) wind turbine caught fire after storms hit Cambridgeshire in the early hours of Wednesday. Firefighters were called to the blaze at the top of the turbine in Benwick Road, Doddington, around 7.50 AM.

The fire service said that parts of it have broken off, with debris scattered in the area but there was no danger to the public.

The cause of the fire is unconfirmed despite some locals suggesting the turbine may have been struck by lightning.

Mellisa Mathews who lives nearby said that "I heard a huge bang at about 7.30am and looked out and saw the turbine on fire. At the time there was a lot of thunder and lightning.”

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service said crews were on standby but the fire was allowed to burn out safely and required no action from them.

The five turbines at the Ransonmoor site, in operation since 2007, produce 26 GWH of electricity per annum, enough to power 6,600 homes for a year.

GE’s Haliade 150-6MW nacelle arrives in UK

The GE Haliade 150-6MW nacelle will undergo advanced test and demonstration programs that accurately replicate real-world operational conditions at the ORE Catapult 15-MW drive train test facility. The first GE Renewable Energy offshore wind turbine nacelle to be tested in the UK has been delivered to Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult‘s 15-MW drive train test facility in Blyth, Northumberland.

The Haliade 150-6MW nacelle reportedly will undergo advanced test and demonstration programs that accurately replicate real-world operational conditions to further enhance performance and reliability.

The nacelle was shipped from GE Renewable Energy’s factory in Saint-Nazaire, France, onboard the vessel Happy Sky. Following the approximate 12-month test program on the Haliade 150-6MW, GE’s next-generation Haliade-X 12 MW nacelle will be also delivered to Blyth for accelerated indoor testing and validation. A full prototype unit will be installed at a yet-to-be-determined site in 2019.

Mr John Lavelle, vice president and CEO of GE’s Offshore Wind business said that “We decided to take our Haliade 150-6MW to ORE Catapult’s site to be tested under rough and extreme conditions in a short period of time that will allow us to collect data to be used on our recently announced Haliade-X 12 MW offshore wind turbine. We will utilize the data and learnings to enhance availability and power output, while introducing new features to meet customers’ demands.”

Commenting on the arrival of the Haliade-150, ORE Catapult Test and Validation Director Tony Quinn said that “GE’s Haliade programs will be the first to use the Catapult’s 15-MW drive train test facility, and the investment in this technology is paramount to bringing such world-leading research and development programs to the U.K., supporting a strong local supply chain and innovation to service the offshore wind industry’s ambitious growth plans.”

The arrival of the Haliade 150-6MW nacelle marks the beginning of GE’s offshore wind research and development activities in the UK, made in close collaboration with ORE Catapult.

GE’s Haliade 150-6MW offshore wind turbine is capable of generating sufficient electricity to power 5,000 homes, and since December 2016, it is successfully powering America’s first offshore wind farm in Block Island, Rhode Island, the company states. In addition, 66 units are currently being installed at Merkur’s offshore wind farm in Germany.

Siemens Gamesa to supply EnBW Albatros offshore wind power plant
Power News - Published on Tue, 05 Jun 2018

Following the 497-megawatt order for the EnBW Hohe See offshore wind power-plant, EnBW has also awarded Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy with the installation of the neighboring 112-MW-project EnBW Albatros. The scope of supply includes 16 direct-drive SWT-7.0-154 wind turbines on monopile foundations and the grid connection via a Siemens Offshore Transformer Module. Siemens Gamesa will install both wind power plants in parallel. Installation will start in spring 2018. The projects are located 90 kilometers north of Borkum Island in the German North Sea with water depths of up to 40 meters. The combination of both projects offers synergies to EnBW in respect to planning, construction, and during operation. Due to Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy's complete solution for Albatros -ranging from turbines to substation technology -the project benefits from full optimization opportunities: Through the project-specific approach, all technology components work perfectly aligned so that the risk for all involved parties is mitigated. At the same time, a bundling of installation works and a centralized project planning create valuable synergies. After commissioning in 2019, Siemens Gamesa will initially provide service and maintenance for the turbines over a period of five years.

EnBW Albatros is the first German offshore wind power plant that Siemens will supply as a full-scope project. Furthermore, it includes the entry of the compact Siemens OTM in the German market. Thanks to focusing on key electrical components and cutting auxiliary systems, it allows a reduction in weight and size of more than 30% compared to a conventional AC substation. Further cost out is achieved by using the same foundation type for the OTM as for the turbines. The ultra-compact design of the platform not only reduces installation costs due to its low weight, but also reduces service and maintenance efforts. EnBW Albatros will be connected to the power grid via the Borwin Beta HVDC converter-platform which is located approximately 25 kilometers away and had been delivered by Siemens as well.

In the same way as for EnBW Hohe See, Siemens is also partnering with the Belgian offshore construction specialist GeoSea for Albatros regarding construction and installation of the monopiles. Again, the extended scope and the inter-coordinated complete solution including installation works, construction elements, and wind turbine technology add to the synergies of the combined projects to enable a highly efficient realization of the projects. Inter-array cabling and coordination of the construction work remain in the scope of EnBW.

Mr Michael Hannibal, CEO Offshore of Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy said that "EnBW Albatros allows us to demonstrate our broad competence in offshore projects, ranging from project specific engineering services and the beneficial combination of power generation and transmission technology to service and maintenance concepts. This project has a high relevance for us since we will turn the 112-megawatt wind power plant into a highly profitable investment for our customer via cutting edge technology and smart details."

Italy's new government to review TAP gas pipeline - Mr Costa
Gasoil News - Published on Mon, 11 Jun 2018

Reuters reported that a plan to build the final stage of a USD 40 billion international gas pipeline in Italy is under review, the country's new environment minister said, calling the project "pointless". Italy is at the end of the Southern Gas Corridor, a pipeline taking gas from central Asia to western Europe. It is a cornerstone of the European Union's energy security policy which aims to wean the bloc off Russian gas supplies.

Environment Minister Mr Sergio Costa, sworn as part of a ruling coalition of anti-establishment parties, said Italy's involvement in the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), the final stage of the 3,500-km (2,200-mile) corridor, would be reviewed along with some other major projects.

Mr Costa, who was nominated as minister by the coalition's biggest party, the pro-environment 5-Star Movement, said that "TAP is on the table and we are looking at it as a priority."

He said that "Given (our) energy policy, given falling gas demand, that project today looks pointless."

A review would likely create tensions between Italy and the developers of the EUR 4.5 billion TAP project, which include British oil group BP, Italy's Snam and Spain's Enagas.

The TAP consortium did not reply to a Reuters request for comment.

It is unclear whether the minister's comments will translate into action. Mr Costa said any decision on TAP's future would also involve other ministers.

The 5-Star also has more radical environmental policies than its coalition partner, the right-wing League.

The parties said they will form a special committee to resolve any differences between them on the "realisation and completion of public works of national significance". The League did not immediately respond to emailed requests for a comment.

In recent years demand for gas in Italy has risen but it is still well below its peaks of a decade ago.

Italy, which imports more than 90 percent of its needs, has key gas contracts with Russia, Libya, Algeria and Holland and previous governments have sought to create a European gas hub.

UC3M researchers new system optimizes electric transmission from offshore wind farms

This innovation, which the UC3M researchers have protected by a set of patents, allows the use of a diode rectifier station in the offshore platform of a high voltage direct current link. In this way the wind turbines alternating current can be easily converted into direct current for the HVDC transmission.

For this, they have developed a distributed control system which allows to synchronise and regulate the electrical voltage and frequency of the wind turbines of the offshore wind farm. This allows the transmission of energy to the general network through a HVDC link with a diode rectifier station. "It is less complicated, cheaper and more flexible than other current solutions", explains one of the authors of the patents, Santiago Arnaltes Gómez, head of the UC3M Power Control Group.

This new system synchronises the wind turbines without using any additional element, since it uses the wind turbines' capacity to contribute to voltage and frequency control. One of key factors is the use of diode rectifier stations, which allow to reduce the cost of the offshore rectifier platform by up to 30 percent, according to some studies. "What we have managed to do is to provide the technical feasibility necessary in order to use this kind of rectifiers, since at the moment wind turbines still cannot work with them," explains another of the authors of the patent, José Luis Rodríguez Amenedo, from UC3M's Department of Electrical Engineering.

The researchers have developed three patents in relation to this system, which they have validated by means of simulations, small-scale laboratory prototypes and proofs of concept. The next step is its commercialisation and industrialisation. The researchers, who has been supported by the UC3M Science Park in the management and commercialisation of this new technological solution said that "Our main clients would be large electricity companies that have the capacity to make these diode rectifier stations.”

Globally, the integration of offshore wind farms into mainland electrical systems is currently being put forward as a way of reducing fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Due to the fact that a significant proportion of the large offshore wind farms planned are located far from the coast, a connection using HVDC links (in direct current) is technically and economically more suitable than a HVAC transmission system (in alternating current).

Wiebes: 6 gigawattpiek in 2030 via huishoudens

Frankrijk draait subsidiekraan offshore windenergie deels dicht - media

SSE to enter Seagreen Scottish offshore wind project into subsidy auction

REUTERS reported that British utility SSE plans to enter its Seagreen wind project that lies off the coast of Scotland into Britain's auction for renewable subsidies next year.

Seagreen Wind Energy Limited, developing the project, is a 50/50 joint venture between SSE and Fluor Limited, the British operating arm of Fluor Corporation.

The project initially received planning consent in 2014. SES said that "Since 2014, offshore wind technology has advanced significantly with larger and more efficient turbines able to generate additional power.”

The cost of producing electricity from wind farms has plummeted in the past few years, with the latest renewable auction clearing last year at a low of 57.50 pounds ($76) per megawatt hour (MWh).

SSE said that if built, the project would be capable of generating enough electricity to power up to 670,000 homes.

The next contracts-for-difference subsidy auction will take place in spring 2019.

Siemens Gamesa will be supplier of largest offshore project

With the final signing of the agreement, Siemens Gamesa will be the supplier of the world's largest offshore project to date, Hornsea Two, promoted by the Danish energy distributor Ørsted. Once it enters service in early 2022, this park will provide clean energy to approximately 1.3 million British households. The installation of the 165 SG 8.0-167 Direct Drive wind turbines 89 kilometers from the British East Coast is scheduled for 2021.

This record project, with a total capacity of 1,386 MW, is not only the largest wind project in the history of Siemens Gamesa, but also the largest order in the history of offshore wind energy. So far, Hornsea One held the record with a capacity of 1,218 MW it has also been developed by Ørsted and is currently under construction.

Mr Andreas Nauen, Offshore CEO at SGRE said that "Ørsted is one of Siemens Gamesa's key partners in transforming a park's offshore wind energy into a source of clean energy at the scale of a power plant. We are proud and satisfied to face this challenge in the framework of a close and lasting collaboration with an experienced operator like Ørsted".

Duncan Clark, program director for the Hornsea 1 and 2 Projects at Ørsted, says that "we are delighted to continue working with Siemens Gamesa and have worked with them on many other projects in the UK, including Race Bank, which opened the month passed and it was the first project in which blades manufactured at the Hull plant were used. "

The Nacelles for Hornsea Two will be produced at the innovative SGRE factory in Cuxhaven, Germany, while most of the blades will be manufactured at the Hull plant in the United Kingdom, where pre-assembly work will also be carried out. The towers are expected to come partly from suppliers in the United Kingdom. A single 8 MW turbine is capable of generating enough electricity for more than 8,000 European homes. Originally planned to accommodate up to 300 wind turbines, Hornsea Two has adapted to the progress of significantly more powerful and efficient materials and components. With only 165 units the original production is matched and the project benefits from a significantly improved economic efficiency and a simultaneous reduction of the LCoE.

The new SG 8.0-167 DD are equipped with a rotor of 167 meters in diameter. The blades, 81.5 meters in length, offer a sweeping area 18% wider and 20% more annual production than its predecessor, SWT-7.0-154. It has proven technology in the Direct Drive platform combined with a large-scale rotor to offer customers a greater return on their investment, while minimizing costs and associated risks.

Mitsubishi commences construction of Borssele III/ IV wind farm

Mitsubishi Corporation announced the achievement of financial close and commencement of construction of Borssele III/ IV Offshore Wind Farm in the Dutch North Sea, in which MC holds shares through its UK based wholly owned subsidiary, Diamond Generating Europe Limited. Prior to this milestone, DGE has divested part of its shares held to funds managed and/or advised by Partners Group, a global private markets investment manager. Partners Group is the fifth member of the Borssele III/ IV consortium, currently comprised of Eneco Group, Royal Dutch Shell, Van Oord and DGE. Total power generating capacity of the wind farm is 731.5MW, with the construction at sea/field starting from the middle of 2019 and commercial production starting in 2021.

Offshore wind power installations in Europe are projected to reach 50 GW in total capacity by 2030. Driven by a growing momentum towards ESG investment, many companies and institutional investors aim to expand their renewable energy portfolios by entering projects after key risks are mitigated. The mutually beneficial share transfer between Partners Group and DGE, allows Partners Group to enter the Borssele III/ IV project in its construction phase, and DGE to further optimize its power generation portfolio through a re-profiling of assets.

Through DGE, MC has participation in four offshore wind power projects in Europe including Borssele III/ IV, with a collective power generation capacity of over 2GW. MC will continue participating in projects that simultaneously generate economic, societal, and environmental value, and leverage its operational experiences to further invest in offshore wind. By so doing, MC aims to accelerate its progress towards achieving a renewable energy composition of over 20% of total attributable power generation by 2030.

Blackrock buys 197.4 Mw wind project in Norway

REUTERS reported that Blackrock, the world's largest investment company, bought a 197.4 megawatt wind farm in western Norway through one of its funds and will cover its construction cost. Zephyr, a Norwegian wind farm developer and operator, will continue to manage the farm's construction, which will cost about 200 million euros (USD 231.76 million) and is expected to be completed by the end of 2020.

The project will be built on the west coast of Norway, close to the city of Floroe and aluminium maker Alcoa will buy the entire electricity produced for a period of 15 years to power its Norwegian based production plants, they said.

The wind farm, called Guleslettene, will carry 47 turbines of 4.2 Mw capacity from Vestas and will have an ability to produce enough electricity to power more than 40,000 houses, said Zephyr.

The construction cost will be funded by Blackrock's equity and a long-term loan from Dekabank.

After the transaction, the cost of which was not disclosed, Blackrock has $5 billion of renewable energy assets under management, with 170 projects within wind and solar, it said.

To date, BlackRock Renewable Power has a total invested portfolio of approximately 4.6 gigawatt (Gw) of generating capacity across wind and solar projects located in Norway, Sweden, USA, Canada, Australia, Japan, Ireland, France and Britain.

Zephyr AS is owned by the energy companies Vardar , Glitre Energi and Oestfold Energi .
