Scottish Borders Council has prepared a major compensation claim against the main contractor for the Borders Railway.
The local authority is seeking full redress from BAM Nuttall for the damage inflicted on roads, bridges and footpaths as a result of the line’s construction over the past two years.“With the main civil engineering works for the railway now at an end, council officers have completed detailed survey work to ascertain the extent of extraordinary roads damage arising from the works,” reported Councillor Gordon Edgar, executive member for roads and infrastructure, at last week’s SBC meeting.
“The damage has been costed and a detailed claim is being put together with the aim of recovering the full cost from BAM Nuttall.
“At present, the extent and details of the claim remain commercially sensitive until agreement has been reached [with the company].”
Although the scale of the claim has yet to be revealed, it is understood it runs into millions, with much of the damage inflicted along the de-trunked A7 and minor roads and bridges north of Galashiels.
Last year’s Scottish Roads Maintenance Conditions Survey revealed that over 43 per cent of the road network in the Borders was already in need of “substantial repair”, placing SBC fifth bottom in a league table of all 32 Scottish local authorities.
