Gemalto, HiSilicon collaborate on NB-IoT modules
December 05, 2017 // By Peter Clarke
Security software company Gemalto NV (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) is collaborating with Chinese telecommunications equipment giant Hauwei, through its semiconductor subisidiary HiSilicon to create narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) modules.
Through the creation of low-power, secure modules the two companies aim to help equipment makers reduce the cost and size of their devices, and lengthen the battery life of the devices to up to ten years.
NB IoT applications can include smart parking sensors, intruder and fire alarms, personal healthcare appliances, tracking devices, and street lamps and NB-IoT modules to connect objects to the Internet could represent 20 percent of cellular modem shipments by 2021 Gemalto said.
"2017 is the year of commercial NB IoT rollouts for us, and we will be building 30 such networks in 20 countries worldwide by the end of the year. Huawei has been a major player in this arena, and we continue to capitalize on this vast opportunity," said XiongWei, president of LTE solutions for Huawei, in a statement issued by Gemalto.
