UN chief warns humanity 'one miscalculation away from nuclear annihilation'

United Nations (United States) (AFP) – UN head Antonio Guterres warned Monday that the world faced "a nuclear danger not seen since the height of the Cold War" and was just "one miscalculation away from nuclear annihilation."

"We have been extraordinarily lucky so far. But luck is not a strategy. Nor is it a shield from geopolitical tensions boiling over into nuclear conflict," Guterres said at the start of a conference of countries belonging to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

"Today, humanity is just one misunderstanding, one miscalculation away from nuclear annihilation," he said, calling on nations to "put humanity on a new path towards a world free of nuclear weapons."

Guterres's comments came at the opening 10th review conference of the NPT, an international treaty that came into force in 1970 to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons.

The meeting, held at the UN's headquarters in New York, has been postponed several times since 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It will run until August 26.

Guterres said the conference was "a chance to strengthen" the treaty and "make it fit for the worrying world around us," citing Russia's war in Ukraine and tensions on the Korean peninsula and in the Middle East.

"Eliminating nuclear weapons is the only guarantee they will never be used," the secretary-general implored, adding that he would visit Hiroshima for the anniversary of the August 6, 1945 atomic bombing of the Japanese city by the United States.

"Almost 13,000 nuclear weapons are now being held in arsenals around the world. All this at a time when the risks of proliferation are growing and guardrails to prevent escalation are weakening," Guterres added.

In January, the five permanent members of the UN Security Council -- the United States, China, Russia, Britain and France -- had pledged to prevent the further dissemination of nuclear weapons.

At the last review conference in 2015, the parties were unable to reach agreement on substantive issues.

Russian Hackers Target U.S. HIMARS Maker in 'New Type of Attack': Report

Russian hackers have launched "a new type of attack" on American military company Lockheed Martin, which makes the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) that the U.S. has supplied to Ukraine, a pro-Moscow news website said.

The Kremlin-supporting Life website reported that the cyberattack by the Killnet and Killmilk hacker groups took place at 7 a.m. on Monday. The groups said the rocket systems - credited by the Ukrainians with shifting the balance in the war against Russia - had been responsible for thousands of deaths.

"The notorious HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems, supplied to Ukraine by the aforementioned military-industrial corporation, allow the criminal authorities of the Kiev regime to kill civilians, destroy the infrastructure and social facilities of the still temporarily occupied Ukraine," the hackers said in a statement reported by Life.

The hackers said Lockheed Martin "is the actual sponsor of world terrorism, is responsible" for thousands of deaths. Newsweek has contacted Lockheed Martin for comment. Newsweek did not see evidence that Lockheed Martin sponsors terrorism.

A Russian military expert claimed on state television on July 28 that Russia had come up with a "secret development" that allows it to hack into the HIMARS systems.

On July 22, members of Killnet said: "We are using a new type of attack, we have no equal in this area. This is a new technology that we are using for the first time against the world's largest arms manufacturer—Lockheed Martin," Life reported at the time

Lockheed Martin's website describes it as a global security and aerospace company.

Rusland veroverde in juli nauwelijks terrein
Het Russische leger heeft in de hele maand juli nauwelijks terrein veroverd in de Donbas. Dat blijkt uit kaarten van de Amerikaanse denktank Institute for the Study of War, die dagelijks bijhoudt waar de frontlinie loopt en gevechten plaatsvinden. Analist George Barros plaatste een compilatie van de kaarten op Twitter.
Zo is te zien dat er in de hele maand slechts minieme verschuivingen plaatsvonden. De maand begon nog goed voor het Russische leger met de verovering van Lysytsjansk, de laatste grote stad in de provincie Loehansk die nog in Oekraïense handen was. Maar sindsdien is het Russische offensief tot staan gekomen. In Loehansk houden twee dorpjes nog steeds stand, en in de aangrenzende provincie Donetsk komen de Russen ook nauwelijks vooruit.

Volgens Barros heeft dat drie oorzaken. Ten eerste kan Oekraïne sinds kort met geavanceerde Amerikaanse wapens Russische aanvoerlijnen en munitiedepots onder vuur nemen. Ten tweede laste het Russische leger een gevechtspauze in van anderhalve week. Ten derde is het Russische leger over het algemeen uitgeput, en is er een tekort aan manschappen en materieel.

Barros ziet het dan ook als onwaarschijnlijk dat het Russische leger binnen afzienbare tijd goed voorbereide en hevig versterkte steden als Slovjansk of Kramatorsk zal veroveren. "Waarschijnlijk niet voor mid-september", schrijft hij, het moment waarop de Russen in bezet gebied annexatiereferenda willen organiseren.

Nu het Russische offensief in Oekraïne vast lijkt te lopen en westerse landen steeds meer wapens naar het land sturen, groeit onder sommige analisten de vrees dat Rusland mogelijk een klein kernwapen zou kunnen gebruiken om een doorbraak te forceren. Maar Russisch president Poetin temperde die vrees vanmiddag in een brief aan de deelnemers van een kernwapenconferentie van de Verenigde Naties.

"Wij gaan uit van het feit dat er geen winnaars kunnen zijn in een nucleaire oorlog en dat die nooit ontketend moet worden", schrijft Poetin. "Wij staan voor gelijke en ondeelbare veiligheid voor alle leden van de wereldgemeenschap."

In ieder geval zal de rattentsaar met atoomwapens blijven dreigen dat staat als een paal boven water met als doel de tegenstanders op afstand houden van zijn Russische grenzen ook als deze naar het westen opschuiven.
Tot nu toe heeft de rattentsaar en zijn kliek met dreigementen het Westen de nodige angst ingeboezemd en lijkt vooralsnog daarin geslaagd.
Ik geef dat feit niet graag toe echter helaas concluderend op hetgeen ik constateer.

Hun inzet was tevergeefs, want de Russische tanks reden gewoon over hen heen. Overal lagen doden en gewonden op straat.

Een paar dagen later was Hitler dood, en was het voor iedereen duidelijk dat de oorlog verloren was.

Interfax Russia reported that Russian President Mr Vladimir Putin at a meeting on the development of the metallurgical industry said that ensuring domestic demand for steel products should be in the focus of attention of both companies in the sector and the government and regional heads. He told “We're not just talking about stable supplies of these goods to our market, but also about an increase in these supplies, about growth in demand, primarily by increasing the volume of construction of housing, industrial and commercial facilities, by implementing large-scale programs to develop infrastructure: railroads, bridges and overpasses, and other capital facilities.”

Mr Putin recalled that at a meeting in April, he gave instructions to approve a strategy for the development of the domestic steel industry through 2030, in which he asked that an emphasis be placed, in particular, on the active growth of domestic steel consumption, ensuring affordable prices for these products for business, large regional and federal projects with a powerful effect on target sectors of the economy. The president also noted that the issue of taxation of the industry was raised in the spring, and the government was instructed to jointly with business to clarify the export directions of Russian steel products in order to redirect the commodity flows to dynamically growing markets.

Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Industry & Trade Mr Denis Manturov said “Russian metallurgists are now operating with limited access to Western markets and exports in Q2 decreased by about 20%. There is also a considerable decline in domestic consumption. As a result, the sector's capacity utilization has decreased from an average of 93% to 80%. The situation is the most challenging at Magnitogorsk at 62% and Severstal at 72%. They produce mostly sheet products, for which demand has decreased the most.”

Mr Manturov also said “It's another matter that the export margin is not the same as it was a year ago. As the global economy slows, steel prices are falling sharply. In addition, in new markets for us, metallurgists are forced to find their niche and work at a discount. External supplies are unprofitable at the current ruble exchange rate. Given these factors, some ferrous metals producers were working at a loss in June-July.”
