VS verijdelen aanslag door Iraniërs
WASHINGTON - De Verenigde Staten hebben een reeks terreuraanslagen verijdeld. Twee Iraniërs wilden bomaanslagen plegen op onder meer de ambassades van Israël en Saudi-Arabië in Washington. Een van de verdachten is gearresteerd, de ander is voortvluchtig. Dat heeft minister van Justitie Eric Holder dinsdag naar buiten gebracht.

Iran non oil export up to USD 32 billion

MNA cited Mr Abbas Memarnejad DG of Islamic Republic of Iran Custom Administration as saying that the country’s export has reached USD 32 billion in the past 9 months and stated that despite economic pressure, non oil export has also increased. The country’s commerce also has exceeded USD 73 billion in the same period.

Mr Abbas Memarnejad pointed to the Custom’s roles and obligations and said that implementation of government policies in export and import, control and supervision of cargo transport through the country’s territory, fighting smuggling and customhouse violations, import and export custom formalities, domestic and overseas transportation, planning and execution of governmental economical policies and collection and analysis of foreign commerce statistics are the most important obligations of the Islamic Republic of Iran Custom Administration.

Mr Memarnejad expressed the Custom’s readiness for strengthening cooperation with the region, standardizing customhouse procedures, as well as expansion of regional interactions.

South Korea sees Iran crude imports down 36pct

South Korea's imports of crude oil from Iran dropped 35.6% last year after sanctions targeting that country's controversial nuclear program squeezed imports.

Data from state run Korea National Oil Corporation showed that the world's fifth largest crude oil buyer imported a total 79.73 million barrels of crude oil in December down 0.8% from a year earlier.

Of this total, South Korea imported 5.72 million barrels or 184,645 barrels per day from Iran in December up 24.8% from a year ago. Compared with November its imports of Iranian crude oil last month fell 2.5%. Total shipments from Iran last year were 56.15 million barrels or 153,405 billion barrels per day.

South Korea is one of Iran's biggest oil customers but imports have fallen as European Union sanctions made it tough to ship, insure and pay for the oil. The West has imposed sanctions on Iran as it suspects Tehran wants to develop nuclear weapons.

South Korean refiners resumed importing Iranian crude oil late in September for October arrivals after 2 month halt, importing about 200,000 barrels per day or full contracted volumes after finding a way around the EU ban on insurance cover.

SK Energy and Hyundai Oilbank, which import Iranian crude will cut imports of Iranian crude during the six months to May jointly by about a fifth from a year ago to avoid sanctions by Washington.

The United States on December 7 granted 180 day waivers on Iranian sanctions to China, India, South Korea and some other countries after they cut oil purchases from Iran.

Preliminary customs data from South Korea's economy ministry showed earlier this month that the country's total crude oil imports in December fell 0.3 per cent from a year earlier to 80.1 million barrels.

Iran and Pakistan make progress on IP gas project

MNA cited Ms Hina Rabbani Khar Pakistani Foreign Minister as saying that Iran and Pakistan have made progress in building a multi billion dollar gas pipeline, despite illegal US engineered sanctions. Islamabad faced a huge challenge to fund the Iran and Pakistan gas pipeline.

She emphasized that Pakistan required USD 1.5 billion to build the 781 kilometer pipeline needed for the implementation of the project on its soil.

The foreign minister stated that her country is holding talks with Tehran to find ways to solve the financial constraints. The pipeline, projected to cost about USD 1.2-1.5 billion, would enable the export of 21.5 million cubic meters of Iran’s natural gas to Pakistan on a daily basis.

Iran second OPEC oil producer again

MNA reported that the latest oil production statistics shows that Iran have become the second oil producing country in OPEC once again with over 3 million barrels of oil daily.

Some of the Western Media recently reported that Iran’s oil production ranking is third after Iraq and Saudi Arabia among OPEC members. But studies show that Iran continues to be in the second place.

Iraq Oil Minister recently announced that Iraq had discovered new oil field close to Iranian border and could produce 3 million barrels a day but they are exporting about 75% of its capacity now.

An Iranian Oil Industry official recently announced that despite of EU oil sanction against Iran, production has increased and Iran is now producing 3.250 million barrels daily. Over 800, 000 barrels are dedicated to domestic consumptions and Iran still has the second place among OPEC members.

The EU sanction has helped create a golden opportunity for Iran to become less dependent on oil export for revenue, and look more into other industrial exports. Economic experts believe that Iran with over 75 million population and over 3.250 barrels of oil has managed its economy, much better than Saudi Arabia which has only 22 million populations and produces over 9.7 million barrels of oil.

Saudi family rulers have been criticized by many Saudi Arabian NGOs for the excessive production of oil resources and questions have been risen as to who are the beneficiaries of oil income and where and how are they being spent. Since their lesser population and larger oil production are not comparable to that of Iran and other OPEC members.

De veroordeelde man staat volgens de aanklagers aan het hoofd van een criminele organisatie in de Iraanse stad Shiraz. Hij is veroordeeld voor diefstal en overspel. Naast de publieke amputatie van zijn vingers moet de 29-jarige Iraniër ook drie jaar de cel in en krijgt hij 99 zweepslagen.

Volgens Mahmoud Amiry-Moghaddam, woordvoerder van Iran Human Rights, is dit de eerste keer dat er beelden worden vrijgegeven van het apparaat dat de beulen gebruiken. 'Wij merken dat de Iraanse autoriteiten steeds vaker beelden vrijgeven van het voltrekken van lijfstraffen.'

'Het aantal publicaties neemt altijd toe als er verkiezingen komen. En we krijgen binnenkort presidentsverkiezingen. Ik geloof dat dit een strategie is om angst in te boezemen bij de bevolking om zo protesten te voorkomen', zegt hij tegen France24.

Iranian steel production up by over 9pct in 2012 YoY

According to the World Steel Association, steel production in Iran has risen by more than 9% adding that the country is now the world's 15th steel producer.

According to the WSA's latest report, Iran's steel production output hit 14.463 million tonnes in 2012 showing a 9.6% growth in comparison with the year before. Among 62 world major steel producers, Iran jumped two steps higher and became the world's 15th steel producer in 2012.

Last month, Mr Mohammad Massoud Sameenejad MD of Mobarakeh Steel Company announced that Iran is the biggest steel producer in the Middle East and North Africa. The WSA has named Iran as the biggest producer of steel in the Middle East and Africa in the same period.

Elaborating on his company's share in Iran's steel production he said that Mobarakeh Steel Company produced 46% of Iran's steel output in the 10 months of 2012.

With a production of 1.09 million tonnes Iran was the world's 16th steel producer in September. Last year, an Iranian official announced that the production of steel in Iran has grown 5 million tonnes in the past two years despite the illegal sanctions imposed by the West against the country.

Mr Hamidreza Taherizadeh VP of Iran's Steel Association said that "Despite the intensified sanctions during the last two years, the capacity of Iran's steel production has increased 5mln tons and we will be completely self sufficient in the steel industry in the next three years."

Iran stops oil export to EU

MNA cited Mr Alireza Nikzad Rahbar spokesman of Iranian Oil Ministry as saying that Iran has stopped oil and gas exports to EU countries in what he calls preemptive sanction. With US and EU new sanctions on Iran’s oil and gas industries to take effect soon, Iran National Oil Ministry has stopped exports of oil and gas in advance of the sanction.

According to the announcement, while export of crude oil and liquefied gas has been increased to most other countries, their crude oil and liquefied gas] export to EU 27 member states has been banned.

Mr Rahbar said that Iran has stopped oil and gas exports to EU for its hostile decisions against Iran until further notice. Despite many requests by EU countries on buying oil and gas from Iran, Iran will not sell any oil and gas to those countries.

He said that currently, Iranian crude oil production and exports are in normal conditions and that after a year of hostile oil sanctions by US and EU, oil exports have not been affected much. Instead, Iran has signed new contracts with other world oil companies to export oil and gas.

He pointed to Iran’s second place in OPEC list of oil producing countries and said that Oil Ministry has planned different scenarios to handle any oil sanctions by Western countries and will implement them when necessary.

Iran biggest car factory projected to be built

MNA reported that the largest car manufacturing factory in Iran with a projected annual output of 5 million cars is projected to be established.

The factory’s output will be higher than the total outputs of the two current main carmakers namely Iran Khodro and Saipa. The new factory will produce the first national Iranian car which will hit the market by March 2015 at an estimated price of USD 10,000 to USD 12,000.

Iran's vehicle manufacturers are faced with both rising production costs and lacking some details as to how to manufacture cars after the giant international auto companies left Iran because of sanctions aimed to curb the country's disputed nuclear program.

These include Italian Fiat, German General Motors and its French partner PSA Peugeot Citroen, South Korean Hyundai and the Japanese Toyota Motor Corporation etc. Iran's major car producer Iran Khodro which had been a partner of France's Peugeot since 1989 had to close some production units.

Iranian car manufacturers produced 72,845 vehicles in the 9th month of the current Iranian calendar year. The amount shows 1.5% increase compared to its preceding month's figure of 71,732 vehicles.

Iran non oil trade tops USD 78 billion in 10 months - Finance Minister

MNA reported that Iran conducted USD 78.2 billion in trade in non oil goods with other countries during the first 10 months of the current Iranian calendar year which began on March 20th 2012.

Mr Shamseddin Hosseini Iranian Finance and Economic Affairs Minister said that “The country exported USD 34.5 billion worth of non oil goods and imported USD 43.7 billion of non oil goods during the 10 month period. That exports of industrial and mineral goods increased by 30% YoY.

In July 2012, Mr Hosseini said that Iran conducted economic transactions with 150 countries in the previous Iranian calendar year (March 2011-March 2012). And about 80 countries transited their products through Iran.

Iran continues trading with the world at a brisk pace, even though certain countries are currently trying to create obstacles in order to hinder the country’s economic progress.

Iran exported around USD 43.7 billion worth of non oil goods in the previous Iranian calendar year and imported about USD 61.8 billion worth of non oil goods to hit the unprecedented mark of USD 105 billion in annual trade.

In May 2012, Mr Kiyumars Fathollah Kermanshahi deputy director of Trade Promotion Organization of Iran said that annual imports and exports are projected to reach USD 77 billion and USD 83 billion respectively by March 2016.

Metalloinvest cuts steel billet output on Iranian sanctions

Reuters reported that Russian steel and raw materials producer Metalloinvest is reducing its steel billet production as Iran's sanctions hit sales of this product and is increasing its pig iron output instead.

Sanctions imposed by the European Union last autumn on sales of steel and other key materials to Iran have prompted most traders and producers to halt sales and have hit hard Russian steel producers, which were heavily reliant on the Iranian market.

Mr Vakhtang Kocharov senior iron trader at Metalloinvest Trading said that "Before Iran was our main market for billet but as you know Iran is now sanctioned and we cannot do anything there so we decided to hold billet production and make more pig iron."

Mr Kocharov underlined that the switch from billet production to pig iron production was not final as things might change based on the political situation in Iran.

Huge oil storage facility inaugurated in Iran

A large oil products storage facility with the capacity of 350 million litres has been inaugurated in Iran's southeastern city of Kerman.

The facility includes 4 kerosene tankers, 5 gasoline tankers, 2 diesel fuel tankers and 2 jet fuel tankers. Some IRR 650 billion has been invested to build the facility.

Mr Mostafa Kashkouli MD of National Iranian Oil Products Distribution Company said that Iran plans to establish storage facilities with the capacity of 1 billion liters for oil products by the end of the next Iranian calendar year.

Last year, facilities were built with 86 million liters capacity adding that 472 million liters have been added to the capacity since the beginning of the current year. The capacity is projected to be boosted by 1 billion liters in the next calendar year.

At present, Iran has the capacity to store 11.5 billion liters of fuel which is sufficient for 58 days consumption. Last year, 16 storage facilities were inaugurated nationwide, boosting the country's storage capacity by 1 billion liters. The storage capacity is planned to hit 14.5 billion liters by 2016.

Mr Alireza Zeighami deputy oil minister of Iran said that a package of investment worth USD 47.5 billion has been prepared to develop different sectors of the oil refining and distribution industry. The national oil pipeline network will be expanded to 5100 kilometers from 3700 kilometers by 2015.

Chinese demand boosts Iran oil shipments

Gulf News reported that Iran crude oil exports leap to their highest levels since EU sanctions took effect last July as strong Chinese demand and tanker fleet expansion helped the OPEC member dodge sanctions.

According to two industry sources and shipping and customs data compiled by Reuters on a country by country basis and corroborated by other sources and consultants, exports rose to around 1.4 million barrels per day in December.

The sources said that they expected exports to dip in January from the December peak ahead of new US sanctions. Western sanctions aimed at curbing Iran’s disputed nuclear program halved Iran’s oil exports in 2012 from 2.2 million barrels per day in late 2011, leading to billions of dollars in lost revenue and a plunge in the Iranian currency.

But continuous robust demand from top buyer China and others such as India and Japan, as well as the purchase of new tankers, allowed the Islamic Republic to unexpectedly boost exports late last year.

Mr Salar Moradi oil market analyst at oil and gas consultancy FGE estimated that Iran shipped more than 1.4 million barrels per day of crude oil in December and forecast that exports would remain between 1.1 million and 1.3 million barrels per day in the Q1 of 2013. This represents an increase from a low point of less than 900,000 barrels per day in September and suggests monthly revenues worth approximately USD 4.7 billion based on December Brent prices. They bought a number of tankers from China and can now do more deliveries. It’s taken some pressure off Iran and facilitated tanker traffic and we are seeing higher exports to China.

Iran president backs small gasoline production refineries

Mr Mahmoud Ahmadinejad president of Iran stressed the necessity for building small refineries in different parts of the country to produce gasoline and gasoil for domestic consumption and to be able to export the products of giant refineries.

Mr Ahmadinejad said that "If we build small refineries in the country, they will be able to produce gasoline and gasoil in the next ten years, and we can export the products of the big refineries.”

He referred to Iran's long term strategy to develop its energy and oil industries and said that we have invested USD 25 billion in the oil industry in recent years.

Iran has expanded its refining capacity during the last couple of years while its gasoline consumption has come down considerably following the implementation of the first phase of cutting energy subsidies. The country plans to increase gasoline and gasoil production capacity by 64 and 12 million liters per day respectively by completion of 9 ongoing development plans at its oil refineries.

These projects include gasoline units at Abadan, Tabriz, Isfahan, Bandar Abbas, Tehran (Shahid Tondgouyan), Imam Khomeini (Shazand) plus development and upgrading plans at Persian Gulf Star and Lavan oil refineries.

Following the implementation of the projects, production of kerosene and jet fuel will rise each by 7.4 million liters and liquid petroleum gas by 7.4 million liters per day.

Asia to deepen Iran oil import cuts in 2013 as sanctions bite

Reuters reported that Iran's crude exports to its biggest customer, Asia, fell by a quarter in 2012 and shipments this year are expected to drop by at least 12% under US sanctions pressure but ample alternative supplies will keep refiners flush with oil.

Government and industry data showed that Asia's main oil buyers cut imports from Iran to an average of 1.09 million barrels per day in 2012 and planned cuts in term contracts for 2013 point to further reductions of at least 135,000 bpd.

However, experts say overall cuts would have to be deeper to secure further waivers from the US sanctions that are aimed at forcing Iran to halt its nuclear program and which have made shipping and paying for Iranian oil difficult cutting overall exports by more than half in 2012.

From Asia, Iran lost USD 14 billion worth of oil exports for the year. Exports will remain under pressure this year as well as the United States lobbies Asian countries to further reduce purchases, even though Iranian exports last month rose to their highest since the EU imposed sanctions in July.

An abundance of alternative supplies, mainly from the Middle East of oil that is of similar quality to what Iran exports and stable prices mean Asian buyers will be able to easily make up for the loss in shipments from Iran.

Mr Fatih Birol chief economist at the International Energy Agency said that "Thanks to the efforts of Saudi Arabia, growth of production in Iraq and the United States, I do not expect any major difficulty in terms of meeting global oil demand this year."

Iran power plant gas input increases 120pct

Iran Daily cited Mr Javad Oji MD of National Iranian Gas Company as saying that average gas delivery to power plants has exceeded 75 million cubic meters per day during January 20th to February 19th 2013 indicating a 120% growth compared to the figure for the same period of last year.

Mr Javad Oji said that gas delivery to power plants during the past two weeks has been favorable adding some days up to 90 million CMPD of gas have been sent to the power plants. Thanks to the adopted measures, no limit exists with regard to gas supply in industrial units. Given the current volume of gas production, NIGC can increase its gas storage for the next year significantly.

He said that on certain occasions during the current year (started March 20), Iran exported 31.5 million CMPD of gas to turkey. This was done due to the long and severe cold weather of the country.

Iran seeks help to recover sunken gas rig

Trade Arabia reported that Iran has called for foreign help to recover USD 40 million gas platform from the Gulf seabed in a rare request by an industry isolated by sanctions.

The South Pars project to develop Iran’s part of the world’s largest gas field has been hampered by a withdrawal of international energy companies, under pressure from US and European governments and difficulties in acquiring technology due to sanctions on trade.

The platform’s huge metal support jacket plunged 80 meters below the surface after a crane broke during installation. The structure, one of four planned for South Pars, weighs more than 1,000 tonnes and the companies involved state run service company Sadra and a National Iranian Oil Company subsidiary have asked for foreign companies to help rescue it.

Iran crude steel output increases since Feb 2012

Iran Daily reported that some 14.967 million tonnes of crude steel has been produced since February 2012 showing an increase of 7.4%.

The World Steel Association announced earlier that Iran has increased its steel production output by more than 9% adding that the country is the world's 15th steel producer.

According to the WSA's latest report, Iran's steel production output hit 14.463 million tonnes in 2012 showing a 9.6% growth in comparison with the year before.

Among 62 world major steel producers, Iran jumped two steps and became the world's 15th steel producer in 2012. Iran ranked above UK, Spain and Canada.

Iranian gas platform sinks to bottom of Gulf

Reuters reported that Iran's Pars Oil and Gas Company hopes to pull USD 40 million gas platform support structure from the bottom of the Gulf after it sank in an installation attempt.

The heavy metal support jacket, one of four planned for phase 13 of Iran's South Pars gas field project, plunged to a depth of 80 meters on Tuesday morning and bad weather is delaying efforts to fish it out.

Mr Sepehr Sepehri Pars official said that "Bad water and weather conditions have presented difficulties for recovering this giant structure. As soon as sea conditions in the region improve, steps to recover this structure at a depth of 80 meters in the waters of the Persian Gulf will begin."

State run Iranian Marine Industrial Company was working with Pars, a subsidiary of the National Iranian Oil Company when an accident on the floating installation platform caused the support structure to sink.

Mr Sepehri said that crisis groups had been set up on the site and in Tehran but did not give any indication of how the jacket weighing over 1,000 tonnes might be recovered.

Iran to inaugurate 40 new ports by mid March

MNA reported that some 40 new ports will be inaugurated across Iran by the end of the current Iranian calendar year .

Mr Ataollah Sadr head of Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organization said that nearly 60 small and multi purpose ports across the country are being established. 11 major ports of Iran have the loading and unloading capacity of up to 172 million tonnes.

In December 2012, Mr Sadr said that Iran plans to increase capacities of its commercial ports by 100% by the end of the current Iranian calendar year (March 20, 2013).

Capacities at Shahid Rajaee Port, Shahid Beheshti Port and Bandar Anzali Port will be doubled to 6 million tons, 6 million tonnes and 16 million tonnes. Just 135 million tons of the ports’ capacity is currently being used for loading and unloading goods.

The ports have the capacity of 5.7 million TEU but only 3 million TEU of the capacity is being used. Iran’s trade turnover in the first 8 months of the current Iranian calendar year which began on March 20, amounted to USD 65.5 billion.

The country conducted transactions with 150 countries during the mentioned period of time. Exports stood at USD 28 billion dollars, while imports surpassed USD 37.4 billion in the 8 month period.
