Interesting Roth Interview Excerpts (3 Ratings) 14 minutes ago
check it,

Q: When is real-Money Mahjong going to launch, on the last conf call you
indicated a 1Q07 launch?

Unfortunately real-money mahjong did not make the Q1 deadline. From
GigaMedia's standpoint the product is ready as the game software has been
provided to its licensing partner, Carmen Media. However, Carmen Media has
not been able to launch the product in the time period they previously
specified as they are looking to do additional stress testing. Management
now expects the product to launch within the next two weeks. We had modeled
only minimal revenue contribution ($200k) and do not believe it will have
any affect on the companies 1Q07 results. Although the company is frustrated
by the delay we believe the long-term opportunities of real-money mahjong
offset any near-term concerns.

Q: On the last conference call you mentioned entering the Japanese market,
can you please elaborate?

The Company believes Japan is one of the most exciting markets and the
potential for real-money gaming is huge. The company plans to enter the
market by offering both real-money mahjong and online pachinko. The company
has developed a very complex engine to run its pachinko product and believes
it will be far superior relative to any competitor products. The current
regulatory environment in Japan is "gray" so the company will proceed
cautiously. Initially, the company will likely offer its products through a
subscription and or AWP model. We believe the company may start reporting
revenue and earnings from this region in 2H07. We highlight that we have not
included any revenue or earnings from online gaming in Japan and any
meaningful contribution would be upside to our estimates.

ik weet niet waar het volledige interview staat en of dit wel klopt.

Re: Interesting Roth Interview Excerpts (7 Ratings) 4-Apr-07 12:22 pm
I have a copy Roth Capital's most recent notes regarding Gigamedia. It is dated April 2, 2007. I can one hundred percent confirm CJ's post and will add a bit more on what the notes indicate:

Roth:
On our recent trip to Asia we had the opportunity to sit down with GigaMedia's senior management team. During our meeting we discussed current business trends and management's lont term growth strategy. We also used the opportunity to ask managmeent the five most common questions we receive from investors.

Me: CJ posted two of the questions from that meeting. Here is another regarding Gigamedias relationship with UIM.

Roth:
Q: Has your business arrangement with Ultra Internet Media (UIM) been reviewed by the SEC? If so, what was the response? We note that GigaMedia has a contractual agreement with UIM to provide online casino and poker software and additional services. In exchange for its software and services, GigaMedia receives a percentage of the gaming revenue generated by UIM's online casino and poker room.

The SEC completed an in depth review of the company's business arrangement with UIM and issued a letter
on December 11, 2006 indicating that it had no further comments. We note that all relevant correspondence
between the SEC and GIGM has been disclosed and filed with the SEC. Further, we note that the company has two separate accounting firms review its financials and business arrangements annually. Finally, management indicated that similar contractual arrangements exist with other casual/MMO online gaming companies doing business in China as a way to address the limitations of foreign ownership of gaming licenses. We continue to believe that the company's relationship with UIM provides a key competitive
advantage. The unique licensing structure with UIM legally preserves GigaMedia's supplier status while providing the benefits of being an operator without the added regulatory risk. Specifically, GigaMedia enjoys favorable revenue sharing rates and avoids frequent contract renegotiations.

Me: Also in there March 14 2007 notes, they state: "despite our positive earnings revisions we still believe our underlying assumptions are fairly conservative providing ample room for the company to beat our numbers"

They are projecteing Free Cash Flow of 40 Million in FY07 and 64 million in FY08. EPS estimates are .64 in FY07 and .86 in FY08.

Hope that helps!

Poland to Legalize Online Poker and Online Gambling
by PokerPages.com
Wed, Apr 4th, 2007 @ 12:00am

Poland is planning to introduce regulations to license and tax online gambling similar to those in Italy, according to a recent article in the Polish newspaper, The Warsaw Voice, signaling that European markets continue to open up for online poker and online gambling.

Poland's decision follows the favorable ruling for online poker and online gambling in the Placanica case by the European Court of Justice (ECoJ) in March (click here to read related PokerPages article).

The courts ruled that Italy cannot use criminal law to ban gaming companies licensed in another EU nation from taking bets in Italy.

The court's ruling concerns three bookmakers who had accepted bets in Italy on behalf of British-licensed firm Stanley International Betting (SIB), where SIB had no license to conduct bookmaking business in Italy.

The ruling says that an online gambling operator who holds a license issued in one EU member state has the right to provide similar services throughout the European Union.

"National regulations that prohibit the acceptance of bets unless one has a license issued by the relevant member state restrict the freedom of services," said the court in substantiating its decision.

Under current Polish law, it is illegal to take part in gambling games offered from companies located in other countries.

But the number of online gambling sites doing business in Poland has been on a rapid rise, for several reasons.

First, it is practically impossible to enforce the ban on their operation. Second, costs are much higher to operate land-based casinos and arcades, and there are statutory restrictions on advertising them in Polish media. Third, Poland currently does not tax online gambling. Fourth, the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIEGA) passed last October caused online gaming sites to look for customers outside of the huge US market.

The Polish finance ministry is working to amend the gambling law to regulate and tax online gambling companies, similar to the way the UK's Gambling Act of 2005 will do when it comes into force this September, and how Italy began to January 2007 (click here to see related PokerPages article on Italy).

The Italian government now collects a 3% tax from gaming companies on gaming revenues that Italian customers generate.

The value of the Polish market for online gambling (including online poker), lotteries and bookmakers is estimated to run into hundreds of millions or even billions of zlotys.

Analyses by the Gdansk Institute for Market Economics (IBnGR) show that such a move could on its own bring in extra annual receipts for the state budget of zl.133 million (USD 46.1 million, or GBP 23.3 million or EUR 34.5 million) from tax on gambling and an extra zl.12 million from income tax (USD 4.16 million, or GBP 2.11 million or EUR 3.11 million).

Cyprus Seeks to Regulate Booming Online Poker & Online Gambling Industry
by PokerPages.com
Thu, Apr 5th, 2007 @ 12:00am

Online poker and online gambling has become very popular in Cyprus, amounting to GBP 28 million in bets during 2006 according to a study by credit card company JCC, which has prompted the Cyprus government to look for ways to better control and tax Internet gambling.

But Cyprus has a few obstacles to deal with before they can do so.

Cyprus is a member of the EU, and a March 2007 European Commission Ruling stressed that any company licensed elsewhere in the EU can do business in other EU states, so Cyprus cannot legally penalize EU-licensed online gambling companies.

They also recognize that it is nearly impossible technically to restrict the industry.

Nonetheless, the Cyprus Finance Ministry is in the process of preparing a bill that would offer tighter controls and better tax generation.

"The new bill aims to regulate Internet betting in a way that, among others, ensures that taxes will be paid by the betting company," the Finance Ministry's spokeswoman, Lenia Orphanidou told deputies last week.

The JCC statistics were presented to the House Institutions Committee last week but according to Marinos Sizopoulos, a member of political party EDEK (Movement of Social Democrats), the amount wagered on online gambling could be as high as GBP1.5 billion, as the JCC figures may not have taken into account the sums of money that are recycled during betting.

Poker Re-categorized as 'Sport' in Russia
April 05, 2007
Vitalij Shumakov

Russian poker players and fans are overjoyed with the news that poker is being accepted as a sport in that important nation. A recent decision by Russian Federation's 'Federal Agency of Physical Culture and Sports' has cleared the way for a new Russian poker boom. It's a long-awaited event for all gambling lovers: Poker tournaments have received the status of official sport competitions.

Dmitry Lesnoy, president of the Sport Federation of Russia, an organization created to promote poker's interests within Russia, testified on behalf of poker during the commission's hearings on the topic. Roughly translated, Lesnoy appealed that poker is an 'intellectual game' with widespread, mass-market interest. Lesnoy , an established Russian gaming writer, also organized a November 2006 conference of pro-gaming forces with representatives present from over 50 different Russian regions. This meeting of the 'Federation of Sports Poker' paved the way for the lobbying efforts supporting the game.

Lesnoy focused on the unique characteristics that define poker as a game of far more than luck: skills and tenacity, analytical constitution, and plenty of training. "It is so pleasant," commented Lesnoy , "that with the general background of persecution from the government towards gambling, the state still revealed wisdom and agreed with a factor, that poker can not belong to the category of gambling. It is a sport!"

Though not yet detailed in later reports, the Russian agency's decision is expected to exempt poker from the provisions of the four 'gambling zones' being created across Russia. Lesnoy hopes that his own federation will fill a strong supporting role in the growth of Russian poker. The organization's goals include the propagation and popularization of poker, the creation of ethical norms and standards, organization of poker tournaments by the sports principles, creating official player ratings, organizing poker schools and growing young talents, and searching for sponsors.

Electronic Arts to buy stake in The9: report
Saturday April 7, 2:45 am ET

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Electronic Arts Inc. (NasdaqGS:ERTS - News) has reached an agreement with The9 Ltd. (NasdaqGM:NCTY - News) to buy a 19 percent stake in the Chinese online game operator for about $200 million, a local newspaper said on Saturday.

EA, the world's top video game publisher, and The9 have reached a basic agreement, Shanghai Securities News reported.

A representative from The9 was not immediately available for comment.

Shanghai-based The9 also obtained the exclusive right to run EA's casual game FIFA Online in China at the end of March, the newspaper added.

A deal would potentially give The9 -- which offers Blizzard Entertainment's wildly popular "World of Warcraft" online game in China -- rights to run more sports-themed casual games from EA, the paper quoted industry insiders as saying.

Meanwhile, a deal would grant EA an indirect way into China's online game market indirectly, the paper added.

"…The SOUTH AFRICA government is expected to publish legislation before the end of the year that will regulate online gambling and online casinos"

More and more countries are deciding to legalize online gambling, latest Poland, Spain, Italy, Singapore, United Kingdom and now South Africa just to mention a few.
