Cummins & Buhler to Develop Versatile Hydrogen Tractors

Actis Signs MoU with Egyptian Government for Hydrogen

Leading global investor in sustainable infrastructure Actis has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Egyptian government for green hydrogen development. The MoU will give Actis an entry point into what could be one of the largest hydrogen markets in the region. While not alone in pursuing green hydrogen, Egypt has a comparative advantage due to its renewable resources and proximity to European and Asian markets. This opportunity is an attractive proposition for Actis as it develops its hydrogen strategy and evolves the next generation of investment platforms.

Hydrogen is widely used globally in commercial industry, for example in the production of ammonia for fertiliser, methanol for plastics and in oil refining. Currently almost all of the world’s hydrogen is produced using fossil fuels, with a significant amount of carbon dioxide emitted as a byproduct of the process.

Green hydrogen is far superior from a sustainability perspective, because it is generated by electrolysing water using renewable electricity and has zero emissions. The production cost of green hydrogen depends on two factors – the cost of renewable power and the cost of the electrolysis equipment – and is currently more expensive than fossil fuel-based hydrogen production. However, with an expected decrease in the cost of both renewable electricity and electrolysing equipment, countries such as Egypt are seizing the opportunity to lead the way.

Shell, Raízen, Hytron USP & SENAI to Convert Ethanol into Hydrogen

Shell Brasil, Raízen, Hytron, Universidade de São Paulo & SENAI CETIQT have signed a cooperation agreement for the development of plants for the production of renewable hydrogen from ethanol. The partnership focuses on validating the technology through the construction of two plants sized to produce 5 kilograms per hour of hydrogen and, later the implementation of a plant 10 times larger at 44.5 per hour.

The agreement also includes Hydrogen Refueling Station on the USP campus in the city of São Paulo. One of the buses used by students and visitors to the University City will stop using diesel and traditional internal combustion engines to start using hydrogen produced from ethanol and engines equipped with fuel cells. With the start of operations scheduled for 2023, the initiative emerges as a low-carbon solution for heavy transport, including trucks and buses, with the first hydrogen ethanol station in Brazil and in the world.

Hydrogen from ethanol will be produced in an innovative way with the biofuel supplied by Raízen and the technology developed and manufactured by Hytron, which currently belongs to the German Neuman & Esser Group, with support from the SENAI Institute for Innovation in Biosynthetics and Fibers from SENAI CETIQT, with financing from Shell Brasil.

Kimberly-Clark & Carlton Power Ink Barrow Hydrogen Pact

The international manufacturer of consumer products including Andrex, Kleenex and Huggies Kimberly-Clark has signed an agreement with Carlton Power to supply hydrogen to the company’s manufacturing facility at Barrow in Furness. This partnership will support the development of Carlton’s proposed Barrow Green Hydrogen scheme in Cumbria and reduce Kimberly-Clark’s reliance on natural gas as part of its global decarbonisation strategy. The Barrow Green Hydrogen scheme is to be located on land adjacent to Kimberly-Clark’s manufacturing facility on Park Road in Barrow-in-Furness. Subject to planning and financing, the £40M scheme is targeted to enter commercial operation in 2025.

Barrow Green Hydrogen will provide Kimberly-Clark and potentially other energy-intensive users in the area for example, those with transport fleet, with hydrogen to fuel their operations. This project will initially feature a 35 MW lectrolyser, expected to produce approximately 3500 tonnes of hydrogen every year , reducing 25,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions which is equivalent to taking 580 trucks off UK roads annually. The hydrogen will be produced by the electrolyser using electricity that is generated from sources of renewable energy, primarily wind and solar power.

The Barrow Green Hydrogen scheme, the first of its kind in Cumbria, was announced last month. Carlton Power identified the opportunity and is leading the development in partnership with a regional public & private sector consortium of Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership, Barrow Borough Council, Cadent Gas and Electricity North-West.

South African Sasol and ITOCHU have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to jointly study and develop the market and supply chain for green ammonia with a focus on its use as bunkering fuel and for power generation. The parties will also evaluate ITOCHU's potential involvement and participation in Sasol's green ammonia export-orientated projects, including product offtake as well as financial support from Japan for studies and grants relating to green ammonia projects in South Africa.

Sasol is advancing a number of green hydrogen studies and projects in South Africa, such as in Boegoebaai in the Northern Cape province, that include green ammonia production at scale for export. Given South Africa's excellent solar, wind and precious metals resources, the country is poised to become a global hub for green hydrogen and its derivatives, such as ammonia and sustainable aviation fuels.

DHL Express Tests Hydrogen Trucks in China

Logistic company DHL Express has launched a pilot project for hydrogen fueled freight trucks in Shanghai in China. The project aims to verify the performance of hydrogen fuel technology in heavy trucks in actual use and accumulate practical experience for promoting the application of hydrogen fuel cell heavy trucks in the logistics field.

The pilot program will last for four weeks, and will be used for long-distance transportation of import and export express shipments between DHL's North Asia Hub at Pudong Airport and DHL's Shanghai-Jiaxing Service Center on Jingtang Road, with a daily mileage of more than 140 kilometers.

DHL Express tested hydrogen-fueled trucks before in the Benelux region with Apple in 2021. During the piloting phase, up to 35 tons of CO2 can be saved with the new technology, according to DHL.

LG Chem Selects Technip Energies Blue Hydrogen Technology

Technip Energies announced that LG Chem has selected its proprietary blue hydrogen technology to supply its Daesan complex in South Korea. The Blue H2 by T.ENTM hydrogen plant will capture a significant amount of carbon dioxide, and reduce carbon emissions from the petrochemical complex. LG Chem intends to utilize the captured CO2. The 56,000 cubic meters per hour capacity hydrogen plant will utilize Technip Energies’ proprietary steam reforming technology to convert methane-rich offgas from the naphtha cracking process into hydrogen. The hydrogen plant will include a selective catalytic reduction unit for control of NOx emissions.

The new hydrogen unit will be integrated with LG Chem’s naphtha cracking complex to allow LG Chem to convert the petrochemical pyrolysis complex to a more sustainable low-carbon process.

Raven SR Trials Full Scale Hydrogen Production Reformer

Pinedale Wyoming based renewable fuels company Raven SR has announced the results of the field trial of its non-combustion equilibrium Steam & CO2 Reforming SR2 unit, which converted methane to transportation-grade hydrogen at a rate exceeding other commercially available technologies for producing hydrogen from methane. Over 95% of the hydrogen currently produced in the US uses Steam Methane Reformation, which has an average first-pass conversion efficiency of only 75-80%.

The 12 August trial, held at Raven SR's Benicia Fabrication & Machine facility in Benicia in California, demonstrated to stakeholders at the event, including investors and local officials, how this ground-breaking technology for waste-to-hydrogen and gas-to-hydrogen processes is commercially ready, effective, and efficient.

The trial comes on the eve of Raven SR opening its Round C financing, which is expected to close this fall, with Raven SR advised by Barclays and BofA Securities. Raven's roster of strategic investors prior to its Round C launch includes Chevron, Ascent Hydrogen Fund, ITOCHU, Samsung and Hyzon Motors.

Raven SR plans to bring its first commercial Steam & CO2 Reforming production facility online in the first half of 2023 at the West Contra Costa Sanitary Landfill in Richmond, Calif., where Raven's facility will convert organic green waste into transportation-grade hydrogen for local customers.

The Raven SR technology can produce emissions-free hydrogen fuel and lower-carbon synthetic fuels from a variety of feedstock sources, including landfills, methane, fugitive gas wells, wastewater treatment plants, agricultural and other sites.

The patented Raven SR Steam & CO2 Reforming process was originally created by the late Professor Mr Terry Galloway, whose earlier commercial systems were smaller until large scale commercialization by Raven SR. Raven SR's technology is designed to produce hydrogen-rich syngas, the essential building block for clean fuels, efficiently and economically. Raven SR's renewable energy products, such as hydrogen, sustainable aviation fuels, synthetic liquid fuels (diesel, Jet A, mil-spec, JP-8), additives and solvents (such as methanol, butanol, and naphtha), will further promote local and regional energy independence and security.

SoCalGas & Univ of California to Build Hydrogen Blending Project

Southern California Gas and the University of California Irvine have announced a proposed collaboration to demonstrate how electrolytic hydrogen can be safely blended into existing natural gas infrastructure on the university's campus. The project aims to help better understand how clean fuels like renewable hydrogen could be delivered at scale through California's existing natural gas system, either to existing customers connected to the gas grid, or to generate clean electricity in zero-emissions fuel cells. The demonstration is an important next step in establishing a statewide injection standard for renewable hydrogen that would promote California's clean energy and resiliency goals. If approved, SoCalGas could begin testing hydrogen blending at UCI as soon as 2024.

As proposed, UCI would use an electrolyzer to convert water into hydrogen for blending into the existing gas grid on sections of the UCI campus. The demonstration would power existing residential and light commercial equipment, including water heaters, boilers, furnaces, and ovens in academic buildings, student amenities, and housing. The project would initially blend 5 percent hydrogen, with a goal of gradually increasing the hydrogen blend up to 20 percent, resulting in potentially significant CO2 emissions reductions.

SoCalGas' collaboration with UCI is part of hydrogen blending demonstration application jointly filed with San Diego Gas & Electric Company and Southwest Gas yesterday with the California Public Utilities Commission.

The demonstration project builds upon the California Public Utilities Commission Hydrogen Blending Impacts Study, performed by University of California, Riverside. The study recommended testing hydrogen blending in a real-world environment as an important step toward establishing a California hydrogen blending standard, which could accelerate the state's clean energy and resiliency goals.

Ohmium to Provide 343MW Electrolyzers to Tarafert

PEM Electrolyzers manufacturer Ohmium International has signed an agreement to provide 343 megawatts of green Hydrogen electrolyzers to developer of a large-scale urea fertilizer and green ammonia production plant Tarafert in Mexico. Electrolyzer delivery will happen over three tranches, with the first 69 megawatts to be delivered in 2025 on schedule for Tarafert's project completion. Ballard to Power India’s First Hydrogen Train

Vancouver Canada based Ballard Power Systems has announced a fuel cell module order from leading rail system integrator Medha Servo Drives, who has been contracted by Indian Railways to develop India’s first hydrogen powered trains. The two retrofitted diesel-electric commuter trains will integrate 8 units of 100 kW FCmoveTM-HD+, Ballard’s latest fuel cell technology, which offers improved efficiency and power density than previous module generations.

The contract to provide the hydrogen-powered trains was awarded to Medha as a first step in Indian Railways’ path to achieve their net zero ambitions. The fuel cell modules are expected to be shipped in 2023, with trains scheduled to go into service in 2024, with potential for additional retrofits following the initial deployment.

Indian Railways estimate their investment in the hydrogen fuel cell project to have a payback of less than two years as the cost of hydrogen is now less than diesel. These conversions are not only expected to be more economic than their diesel counterpart, but also reduce annual carbon dioxide emissions by over 11 metric tons and eliminate nearly a metric ton particulate matter per year.

Lhyfe Launches UK Operation for Large Scale Decarbonisation

The France-based multinational is building UK subsidiary and team in North East England to identify opportunities to deploy production facilities to support the country’s net zero ambitions. The company, which will inaugurate the world’s first offshore hydrogen production demonstrator in Saint-Nazaire in September 2022, aims to produce hydrogen on a massive scale at sea. The huge offshore wind potential the UK has on offer, particularly in the North Sea, is therefore a major asset for the company.

In 2021, Lhyfe inaugurated the world’s first plant supplying a renewable green hydrogen produced using wind power to customers in western France. The company is developing more than 90 innovative projects across Europe. The UK entry is its latest step in its drive toward carbon reduction. Lhyfe already has subsidiaries in Germany (opening in 2020), Denmark, the Netherlands and Sweden (2021), and Spain (2022).

Lhyfe has a strong ethos of working with partners to deliver projects that create real local value, and this is a key focus for the newly formed UK business. Plug to Provide 50MW PEM Electrolyzers to Lhyfe

A pure player in renewable green hydrogen Lhyfe has placed an order for ten 5 megawatt European manufactured proton exchange membrane electrolyzer systems with leading provider of turnkey hydrogen solutions Plug Power for production of green hydrogen across multiple plants in Europe. This is the largest electrolyzer order placed by a French company.

With these electrolyzers of a total capacity of 50 MW (equivalent to up to 20 tons per day), Lhyfe aims to produce a renewable green hydrogen using primarily wind and solar-power for various mobility applications in Europe, including forklifts and light commercial vehicles, such as the Master Van from Hyvia, Plug’s joint venture with Renault with hydrogen deliveries as early as 2023. Lhyfe and Plug, having initiated a strategic relationship in October 2021, will also jointly develop 300MW of renewable green hydrogen plants across Europe by 2025.

The electrolyzers will be assembled in Europe. Plug’s 5MW turnkey electrolyzer is the largest available outdoor solution with the smallest footprint in the market.

Lhyfe will be developing each hydrogen plant, achieving high performance. Lhyfe will also operate each site, manage renewable energy as well as renewable green hydrogen commercialization and delivery.

BAM Launches Hydrogen Construction Machine

BAM Infra Nederland, in close collaboration with Koninklijke van Twist, has successfully converted a diesel-powered asphalt spreading paver into a machine with a hydrogen combustion engine. The engine emits virtually no nitrogen oxide and saves approximately 80,420 kilograms of CO2 on an annual basis.

The asphalt spreading paver is the first machine in the Dutch construction industry powered by a hydrogen combustion engine. The use of this asphalt spreading paver saves around 150 litres of diesel per eight-hour working day. This equates to a reduction of more than 80,420 kilograms of CO2 annually and virtually no emissions of nitrogen oxide. The hydrogen tank can be refilled in 10 to 15 minutes.

Often fuel cells are used to convert hydrogen into electricity. Instead, BAM and Van Twist have used a hydrogen combustion engine. Unlike a fuel cell, the quality of hydrogen is not important for a hydrogen combustion engine. This asphalt spreading paver can therefore operate on any quality hydrogen. This saves on cleaning costs during the production of hydrogen and allows the use of residual flows of hydrogen as fuel.

McDermott Bags Hydrogen Terminal FEED Contract from Gunvor

McDermott International, together with its storage business, CB&I, has been awarded a Front-End Engineering Design contract from Gunvor Petroleum Rotterdam for the Green Hydrogen Import Terminal project. The project is part of Gunvor's program to transform their Rotterdam facility into a green energy hub.

Under the contract scope, CB&I will provide the FEED of the ammonia tank and associated Inside Battery Limits equipment. McDermott will support with FEED activities for the interconnecting pipeline, tie-ins and other Outside Battery Limits scope. As part of the FEED, a project execution cost estimate will be developed as basis for a potential conversion into an engineering, construction and procurement contract for the implementation phase.

Work on the project will be executed from McDermott's office in The Hague, the Netherlands and CB&I's office in Plainfield, Illinois.

Siemens & Deutsche Bahn Test Hydrogen Train & Fueling Station

Hydrogen trains are a particularly climate-friendly drive technology since they operate emission-free with green hydrogen and emit only water vapor. Siemens Mobility and Deutsche Bahn presented the H2goesRail project to the public in November 2020. In addition to the refueling and commissioning tests conducted over recent months, DB employees have been trained to operate the system when it enters service. The Mireo Plus H developed for the H2goesRail project has a range of up to 800 kilometers, is as powerful as its electric multiple-unit counterpart, has 1.7 MW of traction power providing up to 1.1 meters per second acceleration, and a top speed of 160 kilometers per hour.

One key factor needed to make hydrogen technology competitive with diesel fuel in daily operation is a fast refueling process. To provide this, DB has developed a new method that, for the first time, enables a hydrogen train to be refueled as fast as a diesel-powered train. This is especially important considering the closely timed scheduling of DB’s regional passenger service. Hydrogen for the trains will be produced in Tübingen by DB Energy with green electricity taken directly from the overhead power line.

On the route between Tübingen and Pforzheim, for example, switching from diesel to the H2goesRail project train will save around 330 tons of CO2 emissions a year. In general, and depending on the route, the Mireo Plus H can save 520 tons of emissions per year (calculated on a total mileage of 200,000 kilometers). The Mireo Plus H will begin test runs in Baden-Württemberg in 2023. As of 2024, it will be underway in regular passenger service for the H2goesRail project, operating between Tübingen, Horb and Pforzheim and replacing a diesel railcar currently in use on that route.

The joint funding project is officially called “H2goesRail”. The Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport BMDV is funding the project with over EUR 13 million through the National Innovation Program for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology NIP 2. NIP 2 is coordinated by NOW (National Organization for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology) GmbH and is being implemented by project lead Jülich. For the project’s one-year trial operation, Siemens has developed a two-car regional train using a next-generation hydrogen drive system. The train operates with two propulsion systems, each consisting of a fuel cell and a lithium-ion battery. The Mireo Plus H is as powerful as an electric multiple-unit train and has a range of up to 800 kilometers – depending on operating conditions such as season or route. A three-car variant has a range of up to 1,000 kilometers. Thanks to its reduced maintenance and repair costs, the train has low lifecycle costs. The Mireo Plus H has a top speed of 160 kilometers an hour.

DB has developed, tested and optimized the related hydrogen infrastructure. Hydrogen is produced by electrolysis at the DB maintenance depot in Tübingen using green electricity taken directly from the overhead power line. In the electrolyzer, water is split into hydrogen and oxygen using electricity. After being compressed, the hydrogen is kept in a mobile storage unit. Prior to the refueling procedure, the green fuel is processed and cooled. The mobile system will enable DB to conduct further test projects on non-electrified rail routes. he train is refueled with hydrogen in an innovative procedure that, for the first time, takes no longer than tanking a diesel train. This is an especially important factor considering that DB’s commuter and regional trains operate on closely timed schedules. Thanks to this fast refueling process, hydrogen technology will be economically competitive with the diesel fuel currently in use.

HyTech Appointed by BEIS to Support Work on Hydrogen for Heating

The HyTech consortium will be led by DNV, the independent energy expert and assurance provider, in collaboration with Progressive Energy, Frontier Economics, Enertek International, Flex Process and Dave Lander Consulting to support Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy in the assessment of the feasibility, costs, and benefits of using 100% hydrogen for heating in the UK. The UK Government is working with industry, regulators and others to deliver a range of research, development and testing projects to assess the feasibility, costs and benefits of using 100% hydrogen for heating. This work includes a pioneering programme of community trials. The results of these projects will enable strategic decisions in 2026 on the role of hydrogen in heating.

This important contract award arrives swiftly on the heels of the publication of DNV’s ‘Hydrogen Forecast to 2050’ in June. The main message in the report was that hydrogen has a crucial role in decarbonizing the world’s energy system, but uptake globally will be too slow. Europe is a forerunner with hydrogen set to take 11% of the total energy mix by 2050.

The contract will span two years.

Optima Life Science, a specialist in the field of web processing technologies, is currently developing a test converter specifically for the development and testing of innovative manufacturing processes for fuel cells. Therefore, the company receives considerable funding from the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg. The heart of the fuel cell is the membrane electrode assembly. Hydrogen and oxygen are present and electrical energy and water are produced in an electrochemical reaction. The individual components such as membranes, frame material and gas diffusion layers are each fed from the roll in Optima systems. Individual parts are cut to size and assembled into the MEA in the complex, continuous web process. In order for the fuel cells to achieve the desired level of efficiency, all process steps require maximum precision. In addition to the manufacturing technologies required for MEA production, Optima offers the traceability of each individual MEA with its digital solutions. Optima Life Science already offers production systems for fuel cells with a high output. Building on this experience, the company is currently developing a modular test converter. Innovative ideas and process optimizations, as well as product developments can thus be implemented quickly and easily. In the future, production processes for fuel cells will first be verified in a development environment and then transferred to highperformance systems Further developments in fuel cell technology will foreseeably always require new structures and dimensions of the fuel cells and thus also of the membrane electrode assembly (MEA). The need for development and refinement of manufacturing processes is in high demand. The OPTIMA MTC (Modular Test Converter) is just designed for this purpose. The adaptable arrangement of the different processes, the reconfiguration and the addition and removal of process steps become reality. Individual processes and complex process sequences, up to the finished MEA for the fuel cell can be tested. Another benefit is the reduced economic risk when product development and manufacturing process development can go hand-in-hand. Ideas for process and product optimization can also be implemented quickly and validated in the course of product development. The knowledge gained can quickly be implemented into production. Last but not least, sampling and small series production can take place on the OPTIMA MTC system. Experiences from projects that have already been implemented and inquiries from the hydrogen industry showed that there is an enormous need for product and process development. Optima Life Science responds to this request by developing and building the OPTIMA MTC test converter. To exploit the full potential of production methods and to support the rapid growth of this future technology, Optima received funding from the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg. As part of the “Future Program Hydrogen BW”, the Ministry of the Environment, Climate Protection and the Energy Sector has been funding a total of 20 projects of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies since the beginning of 2022. The state government is providing budgetary funds of 26.4 million Euros for the development of this technology.
