White House offers baffling explanation for Trump’s best wishes to Ghislaine Maxwell — two days later

The White House finally offered an explanation for President Donald Trump offering well wishes to accused child sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell.

The president said he wished his former acquaintance well as she faces charges related to her involvement with the late financier Jeffrey Epstein, another Trump associate and convicted sex offender who died in jail awaiting trial on new sex trafficking charges.

“What the president was noting is that the last person who was charged in this case ended up dead in a jail cell,” White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany told Fox News, “and the president wants justice served for victims in this case, and he prefers that to play out in a courtroom.”

Fox News anchor Bret Baier didn’t let her off the hook just yet, saying that many found Trump’s response strange, and McEnany insisted the president seriously addressed sex trafficking allegations against his friends.

“This president is the president that banned Jeffrey Epstein from coming to Mar-A-Lago,” McEnany said. “This president was always on top of this, banning this man from his property long before this case was played out in court as well.”

Trump and Epstein had a falling out around 2004, apparently over a real estate deal, but the convicted sex trafficker and the future president were close for years prior to that and were frequently photographed and videotaped partying with younger women.

Gevangenisautoriteiten hebben het medisch verlof van Michael Cohen uit wraak ingetrokken omdat hij een boek wil schrijven over de Amerikaanse president Donald Trump, zegt een federale rechter donderdag.

De rechter oordeelt dat Cohen zijn straf daarom weer thuis mag uitzitten, aldus The New York Times.

Cohen was jarenlang een van de voornaamste vertrouwelingen van Trump, maar besloot later tegen de president te getuigen in het Ruslandonderzoek. Cohen was toen zelf veroordeeld tot drie jaar celstraf voor onder meer fraude tijdens zijn werk voor Trumps verkiezingscampagne.

In april mocht Cohen, die ooit bekend stond als 'de pitbull van Trump', met medisch verlof vanwege de uitbraak van COVID-19 in het Amerikaanse gevangeniswezen.

Toen dat verlof deze maand werd ingetrokken en hij weer de cel in moest, tekende Cohen maandagavond bezwaar aan bij de rechter.

"Ik oordeel dat Cohen van huisarrest naar de gevangenis is overgebracht uit wraak", zei rechter Alvin Hellerstein donderdag. "Het is uit wraak omdat hij zijn recht op vrijheid van meningsuiting wil uitoefenen door een boek te publiceren en dit te bespreken op sociale media met anderen".

Rechter verbaasd over voorwaarde

De Amerikaanse procureur-generaal stelt dat het verlof beëindigd werd omdat Cohen recalcitrant was tijdens een gesprek met zijn reclasseringsambtenaar.

Maar Cohen zegt dat hij terug naar de gevangenis moest omdat hij niet instemde met een voorwaarde van zijn verlof, die hem verbood om een boek te schrijven of op een andere manier naar buiten te treden.

De rechter gaf Cohen gelijk en zei in ruim twintig jaar tijd nog nooit een dergelijke voorwaarde gezien te hebben.

Boek beschrijft Trump als 'oplichter'

De oud-advocaat van Trump heeft aangekondigd een boek te schrijven dat zou aantonen dat de president een "racist", "oplichter" en "valsspeler" is en licht zou schijnen op het gedrag van de voormalige vastgoedmagnaat en realityster "achter gesloten deuren".

Cohen besloot na zijn veroordeling in 2018 tegen de president te getuigen in het onderzoek naar Russische inmenging in aanloop naar de Amerikaanse verkiezingen van 2016.

Naar aanleiding van dit onderzoek geleid door speciaal aanklager Robert Mueller, werd Cohen ook beschuldigd en veroordeeld voor verschillende misdrijven.

De oud-advocaat bekende uiteindelijk schuld aan het betalen van zwijggeld aan vrouwen die zeggen een affaire met Trump gehad te hebben, belastingfraude, bankfraude en een overtreding van wetten op campagnefinanciering.

Covid-19 patients will be ‘sent home to die’ if deemed too sick, Texas county says

The situation was not always as dire in this rural South Texas county.

Starr County once went about three weeks without a COVID-19 case at the beginning of the pandemic. It banned large gatherings, tested hundreds of residents a day, issued stay-at-home orders and required face masks — many of the same mandates now commonplace across the U.S. The poor and mostly Latino county on the Mexico border was containing COVID-19.

“A model for the country,” Starr County Judge Eloy Vera said Tuesday — as he shared an update that now appears gloomy.

In April, its aggressive and successful approach to beating the coronavirus was spotlighted by NBC News.

“We are very proud at this point that our numbers are very low, considering we are an at-risk population and the disparity in medical services and our low socio-economic population,” Joel Villareal, mayor of county seat Rio Grande City, told NBC News. “We rank as one of the poorest counties in the nation. However, that does not deter us.”

But after Gov. Greg Abbott issued orders for the reopening of the state, overriding local control and decision-making, COVID-19 cases surged.

Now Starr County is at a dangerous “tipping point,” reporting an alarming number of new cases each day, data show. Starr County Memorial Hospital — the county’s only hospital — is overflowing with COVID-19 patients.

The county has been forced to form what is being compared to a so-called “death panel.” A county health board – which governs Starr Memorial – is set to authorize critical care guidelines Thursday that will help medical workers determine ways to allocate scarce medical resources on patients with the best chance to survive.

A committee will deem which COVID-19 patients are likely to die and send them home with family, Jose Vasquez, the county health authority, said during a news conference Tuesday.

“The situation is desperate,” Vasquez said. “We cannot continue functioning in the Starr County Memorial Hospital nor in our county in the way that things are going. The numbers are staggering.”

Starr County, with a population of about 61,000, is located about 230 miles south of San Antonio. The county has 1,432 confirmed coronavirus cases and 15 deaths. But Vasquez told The Monitor there are more than 30 more pending confirmation.

Trump says he could send as many as 75,000 federal agents to US cities

President Donald Trump said Thursday that he's willing to send as many as 75,000 federal agents into American cities to quell violent crime, a recent campaign theme for the President.

Speaking in a telephone interview on Fox News, Trump began by saying he was ready to dispatch "50,000, 60,000 people" into American cities.
But eventually he upped the figure to 75,000 -- but said it would require local authorities asking for help.
"We have to be invited in. At some point we'll have to do something much stronger than being invited in," Trump said.
"We'll go into all of the cities, any of the cities. We're ready," he added.

Deploying 75,000 officers would mark a significant portion of all federal officers in the country. According to a 2019 report from the Bureau of Justice Statistics, there were approximately 100,000 federal law enforcement officers in the entire United States in 2016, the last year for which data was available.

Trump's comments come as he has tried to make federal policing a campaign issue, portraying cities as violent and out of control in an appeal to suburban residents. The President said Wednesday that he will "surge" federal law enforcement officers to Chicago and other American cities, despite resistance from local leaders, as he adopts a hardline "law and order" mantle ahead of November's election.

With coronavirus cases surging in Florida, Republicans are planning to move the three nights of their national convention from an indoor arena to an outdoor venue in Jacksonville, but it’s still unclear how many people will be allowed to attend the events, people familiar with the discussions said Tuesday.

Officials met Monday night to discuss shifting the events of Aug. 25, 26, and 27 out of the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena, where the indoor program was scheduled to take place, including President Trump’s acceptance speech on the final night. The two outdoor options they’ve been examining are near the arena, the people familiar with the discussions said.

Mr. Trump often shifts positions, and officials emphasized that the plans could change.

The Republican Party will hold a scaled-back convention in Jacksonville, Fla., next month that includes a mix of outdoor and indoor venues, according to a letter sent to delegates.

The Thursday letter from Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel, obtained by The Washington Post, said admittance will be limited to only regular delegates for the first three days of the convention — or about 2,500 people. For the final day, when the president attends, delegates will get a guest, and alternate delegates can also attend — or 6,000 to 7,000 people.

The Republican Party is still planning on bringing together thousands of its party members to try to salvage some semblance of a national convention next month. The Republican National Convention was scheduled to be held in Charlotte, North Carolina, but after the state’s Democratic governor imposed safety-minded restrictions on the mass gathering, the GOP decamped to Florida, moving many of the highest-profile, public-facing events to Jacksonville. On Monday, however, a little over a month until the convention is set to kick off, Florida is drowning in new cases of the coronavirus, and Jacksonville Sheriff Mike Williams said safely hosting the event as constituted is no longer an option. In a briefing with reporters Monday, the Republican sheriff said his office was “past the point of no return to execute the event with safety and security that is our obligation.”

“The overarching concern is the timetable,” Williams said. “The bits and pieces I have in front of me today is not something I can support.” Williams said his department’s responsibility is “what’s happening outside the fence” of the convention, but given the late changes and uncertainty, he still had not signed any contracts that would create the infrastructure necessary to provide security at such a large, high-profile event. “Any plan requires finances and resources. I don’t have what I need to keep our community safe, “Williams said. “I don’t know where we go from here. … I just know what I have in front of me isn’t going to work.”

President Donald Trump abruptly canceled the Jacksonville portion of the Republican National Convention Thursday, throwing the event into chaos a month before it’s scheduled to start.

Trump had forced Republicans to move the event to Florida after failing to get guarantees he could have a full house in Charlotte because of the coronavirus. But Jacksonville, like the rest of Florida, has been hit with a surge of COVID-19 cases. Trump said Thursday it was irresponsible to hold the convention there.

“I told my team it’s time to cancel the Jacksonville, Florida, component of the GOP convention,” he told reporters at the White House. “We’re going to do some other things with tele-rallies and online the week that we’re discussing ... I’ll still do a convention speech in a different form. But we won’t do a big crowded convention per se, it’s just not the right time for that.”

Democratic officials have instructed senators, members of Congress and party delegates not to physically attend their national convention this summer, a sign of the ever-shrinking aspirations for their big campaign event in the face of a surge in coronavirus cases in the United States.

The directive, issued Thursday, ensures that little will happen at the convention site in Milwaukee beyond speeches from former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr., his vice-presidential nominee and a handful of other top party leaders. The remainder of the events — state delegation meetings, parties, voting on the party platform and on Mr. Biden’s nomination — will happen virtually or not at all.

Electoral College: Florida Moves From Toss Up to Lean Democrat

Given its track record in presidential campaigns over the last 20 years, it’s hard to think of Florida as anything other than a Toss Up. Since 2000, the winner of the state has never carried it by more than 5 points. In fact, in four of the last five presidential elections, the winner squeaked in by 3 points or less.

But, at this point, this battleground state looks less like a 50-50 proposition and more like a state that is leaning Biden’s way.

To paraphrase CNN’s crack polling analyst Harry Enten; sometimes politics is complicated, sometimes it’s not. Right now, it’s really not. When a major health crisis hits, Americans expect their leaders to handle it. If they don’t, voters will turn against them.

In Florida, as COVID-19 cases started to rise this summer, Trump has seen his vote margin and his job approval rating drop.

In the FiveThirtyEight poll tracker, Trump held a decent — though unimpressive, 47-48 percent of the vote against Joe Biden in the Sunshine state from March through April. By May, it had dropped to 45 percent. He has spent most of June in the 42-43 percent range. Biden’s lead has expanded from 2 points in March to almost 7 points in July.

It’s not just Trump who has seen his numbers slump as the state has struggled to contain the virus this summer. GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis has seen a drastic change in his political fortunes from spring to summer. A Quinnipiac poll released this week found DeSantis’ job approval rating at just 41 percent favorable to 52 percent unfavorable — a 19 point shift in negative opinion since April.

That July Quinnipiac poll found Biden leading Trump by 20 points on who is best able to handle the coronavirus, including an eight-point lead with those 65 and older. For months, Trump has questioned the severity of this crisis. But in Florida, 83 percent of voters see coronavirus as a serious problem, and 66 percent are very, or somewhat worried that they will get this virus. The only group not taking coronavirus seriously are Republican voters; 52 percent say they think the virus is under control.

Back in April, the last time Quinnipiac polled Florida, Biden had a narrow 4 point (46-42 percent) lead. In July, that lead has ballooned to 13 points (51-38). The big changes from April to July were among independents (Biden went from +7 to +16), men (Biden from -6 to +7) and white men (Biden from -21 to -11). Biden also improved his vote among Latinos by 9 points (from +8 to +17).
