President Trump op donderdag bekritiseerd Michigan Gouverneur Gretchen Whitmer in een reeks tweets, en vervolgens een verschijning op Fox News, nadat het werd onthuld de FBI gedwarsboomd een vermeende complot om haar te ontvoeren en met geweld omverwerpen van de staatsregering.

Waarom het er toe doet: De tweets van Trump komen nadat Whitmer president Trump eerder donderdag in een toespraak aanviel voor zijn positie in extremistische groeperingen. De gouverneur zei extremisten hoorde Trump's weigering bij een debat vorige maand om expliciet te veroordelen blanke suprematie groepen "niet als een berisping, maar als strijdkreet, als een oproep tot actie."

Wat hij zegt: "Gouverneur Whitmer van Michigan heeft verschrikkelijk werk verricht. Ze sloot haar staat af voor iedereen, behalve de vaaractiviteiten van haar man. BREAKING: Hannity heeft Trump zojuist 3 keer gevraagd of hij negatief heeft getest, nadat hij zei dat hij zaterdag een bijeenkomst zal houden. De eerste twee keer veranderde hij van onderwerp. De derde keer zei hij dat dokters heel weinig infectie en virus vonden en dat de test morgen zal plaatsvinden.

The Wolverine Watchmen militia group didn't just plot to kidnap Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, but they were on a mission to attack the state Capitol and target police officers at their homes as part of a broader mission to instigate a civil war, authorities said Thursday in announcing felony charges against 13 militia members accused in a sensational case of domestic terrorism.

Attorney General Dana Nessel referred to the accused as "extremists" who are hoping to recruit new members "by seizing on a moment of civil unrest" to wreak havoc on the country. She identified the militia group as the Wolverine Watchmen, whose members are accused of, among other things, conducting surveillance outside Whitmer's vacation residence, using code language and encrypted messages to throw off police and planting a bomb under a bridge to divert law enforcement.

“There has been a disturbing increase in anti-government rhetoric and the re-emergence of groups that embrace extremist ideologies,” Nessel said at a press conference Thursday. "This is more than just political disagreement or passionate advocacy, some of these groups’ mission is simply to create chaos and inflict harm upon others.”

Nessel's comments follow the filing of an FBI affidavit in U.S. District Court that alleges six militia members plotted a revolt on the government that included kidnapping Whitmer.

Former top GOP fundraiser Elliot Broidy charged for foreign lobbying

Elliot Broidy, the former deputy finance chairman of the Republican National Committee, appears set to plead guilty to conspiracy to act as an unregistered foreign agent by lobbying the Trump administration to drop an investigation into the massive Malaysian embezzlement (geld verduistering van ruim 4 miljard ) scheme 1MDB, according to a court filing.

Why it matters:
Broidy is the latest 2016 Trump campaign associate to face criminal charges, joining former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, deputy chairman Rick Gates, chief executive Steve Bannon, adviser Michael Flynn, outside adviser Roger Stone and fellow deputy finance chairman Michael Cohen.

Broidy is accused of leveraging his "access to and perceived influence" with President Trump and the administration in order to secure payments from Malaysian businessman Jho Low, who is not named in the indictment.

Low has separately been charged for his role in "orchestrating and executing a multi-billion-dollar embezzlement scheme from 1MDB." Broidy is accused of lobbying the Justice Department to drop the investigation without registering as a foreign agent.

Broidy is also accused of lobbying the Trump administration to deport wealthy Chinese dissident Guo Wengui, an associate of Steve Bannon, back to China.
