Ongoing shortages in semiconductor supply continue to hamper automotive production.
Toyota Automotive Industry Turkey, continuing its production activities in Turkey with its factory in Sakarya, has announced that it will halt production for two weeks due to the microchip crisis.
The factory will not produce between 20 August and 5 September.
Toyota, which produces the C-HR and Corolla models at its Sakarya plants, has a capacity of 280,000 units and exports 90% of its production to 150 different countries. 79% percent of its 2020 exports were directed to Europe, 7% to North America and 13% to MENA and other countries.
The company aims to produce 247,000 vehicles in 2021 and export 197,000 of them.
According to OSD (Turkish Automotive Manufacturers' Association) data last week, it was seen that the impact of the microchip shortage on the automotive industry increased and the production fell by 44% in July.
While most market participants do not expect the semiconductor shortage to be resolved before 2022, some think the effects of the shortage will continue until 2023.
OSD expects the effect of the shortage to continue until the second quarter of 2022. Having updated year-end objectives once again in July after April, OSD decreased year-end export volume to 1,020,000 units.
According to automotive industry international reports, 4.94 million vehicles were not produced in 2021 due to the microchip crisis until July, and this number is predicted to reach 6.1 million units by the end of the year. The cost of the microchip crisis to the world automotive industry is estimated at $110 billion.
