Did Turkey Just Declare War On Syria?

It is frightening to imagine what a real war in the Middle East might do to the price of oil.

Iran will produce highly enriched uranium - MP

Tehran Times cited MP Mansour Haqiqatpour deputy chairman of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee as saying that Iran will produce highly enriched uranium if the nuclear talks between Tehran and the 6 major powers fail to yield positive results.

He said that "If the talks between Iran and the 5+1 group (the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany) do not yield results the Iranian youth will produce up to 60% enriched uranium to fuel submarines and oceangoing ships."

A senior US official said that the 6 major powers had decided to lay the groundwork for another round of negotiations with Iran. The latest round of high level talks between Iran and world powers was held in Moscow on June 18th and 19th 2012.

Mr Haqiqatpour said that "The 5+1 group which repeatedly postpones the talks, should be aware that if the talks are dragged on into the next year Iran may start producing uranium enriched to a purity level of 40% to 50%.”

He was apparently referring to the next Iranian calendar year which ends on March 20th 2013. He said that they should not suppose that if they increase threats and sanctions and intensify pressure on the country we will remain calm. Now, we need 60% enriched uranium to fuel ships and if Western countries do not provide us with it our youth will produce it.

Recently, MP Hossein Naqavi Hosseini said that the Majlis Industries and Mines Committee had approved a plan which called for Iranian oceangoing tankers and ships to be powered by nuclear fuel in order to eliminate their need to be refueled while on long voyages.

Earlier, MP Rouhollah Abbaspour the rapporteur of the Majlis Industries and Mines Committee had said that in response to the West's anti Iranian sanctions the administration would be obligated to equip some vessels of the country's shipping fleets with enhanced propulsion systems that would allow them to operate for long periods without needing to be refueled.

Iran needs to produce uranium enriched to a purity level of higher than 20% in order to fuel the ships equipped with enhanced propulsion systems.

Iran sees NGL plant opening by 2014

Reuters reported that Iran expects to open a natural gas liquids plant near its main oil export facility on Kharg Island before March 2014.

National Iranian Offshore Oil Company official said that the project will gather associated gases from Iran's oil fields to produce up to 600 million cubic feet of gas liquid per day.

The plant, which is half built, could capture 400 million cubic feet per day of gas currently being flared from nearby oil facilities. NGLs include propane, butane, pentane, hexane and heptane.

The vast majority of Iran's oil exports are shipped from Kharg Island but exports from the facility have fallen sharply in 2012 due to sanctions on Iranian fuel exports.

Iran and Turkey to sign agreements in energy field

Tehran Times reported that the signing of a number of economy and energy agreements is planned during the visit of Iranian VP Mr Mohammad Reza Rahimi to Turkey which will take place on October 5th 2012.

According to deputy minister of foreign relations, the first vice president will visit Turkey due to invitation of the Prime Minister Mr Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Previously, Mr Taner Yildiz Turkish minister of energy and natural resources spoke on signing of new agreements in energy field between Ankara and Teheran.

Mr Mohammad Reza Rahimi first VP of Iran is due to visit Ankara to meet high ranking Turkish officials on bilateral ties and other issues of mutual interests.

Mr Seyed Abbas Araqchi Iranian deputy foreign minister for Asian and Pacific Affairs said that "Mr Rahimi will head to Turkey at the invitation of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and in line with efforts to expand bilateral relations."

Iran and Turkey are determined to boost their trade exchanges to USD 30 billion in the near future. Turkey imports around 8 million tons of oil and 8 billion cubic meters of gas per year from Iran.

Iran and Turkey have in recent years increased their cooperation in all the various fields of economy, security, trade, education, energy and culture. The two sides have exchanged several politico economic delegations during the last few months.

US likely to allow Sri Lanka to import crude oil from Iran

Despite the US embargo, the US government has tentatively agreed to allow Sri Lanka continue importing crude oil from Iran.

Mr Siva senior Ceylon Petroleum Corporation official said that “The US government is glad that Sri Lanka reduced the import of Iranian crude oil from 14 shipments to 10 during the trade embargo. Therefore, the US is ready to allow Sri Lanka to import 10 shipments of Iranian Light for the use of Sapugaskanda Oil Refinery as only Iranian crude oil is suitable for the purpose. But there were other issues to be addressed before resuming the import of crude oil from Iran as a result of the trade embargo.

He said that Sri Lanka was not in a position to import crude oil from Iran until the issues pertaining to freight insurance bank transactions and LOC which have been restricted in respect of trade with Iran. Sri Lanka was in the process of sorting out these problems with the State Department and a final decision was expected at the end of this month when Miss Alison visited Sri Lanka once again for further discussion on the matter.

The SOR was designed by Iranian in such a way that it could refine only Iranian Light produced by that country. The SOR refines 6,000 tonnes of Iranian light a day and after the recent repair work the refinery runs at 80% capacity.

Mr Silva said that there was no fuel crisis right now and ample stocks were available. CPC would not increase fuel prices though the IOC increased their petrol and diesel prices recently and added that the IOC fuel price increase would not have a big impact on the local market as CPC is the market leader with 95% market share.

South Korean refiner lifts Iranian crude cargo

South Korean refiner Hyundai Oilbank has loaded a cargo of crude in Iran for delivery later this month while a cargo for refiner SK Energy arrived this week as Seoul resumes imports following 2 month gap.

The north Asian country has restarted Iranian oil imports of about 6 million barrels per month or 200,000 barrels per day of full contracted volumes after a way was found to get around a European Union ban on insurance cover. The cargoes are being transported under Iranian insurance cover to avoid sanctions.

A company source said that Hyundai Oilbank lifted its first Iranian crude last week and it is expected to arrive later this month. Among South Korea's four refiners only SK Energy and Hyundai Oilbank import Iranian crude.

The resumption of imports is unlikely to hinder South Korea's bid to extend a US sanction waiver in December as this year's imports are still down sharply from a year ago.

According to data from state-run Korea National Oil Corporation, South Korea's imports from Iran during the first eight months were 38.77 million barrels or about 159,000 barrels per day down nearly a third from a year ago.

A government source said that the United States wants to see us import no Iranian crude ultimately. A total of KRW 6 trillion to KRW 7 trillion was being held in Iran's won denominated accounts at Industrial Bank of Korea and Woori Bank both owned by the government.

The accounts were to settle payment for Iranian crude but Tehran cannot repatriate them due to Western sanctions though can use them to pay for imports of goods from South Korea.

Tehran offered to provide up to USD 1 billion of insurance cover to Iranian vessels shipping oil to South Korea as Iran seeks to keep its crude flowing to its top four customers South Korea, China, India and Japan.

The four countries which buy more than half of Iran's oil exports, have slashed purchases this year under pressure from EU and US sanctions aimed at squeezing Tehran's oil income to curb its nuclear program suspected of developing weapons.

Iran boosts gas exports to Turkey

Trend cited Mr Majid Boujarzadeh spokesman of National Iranian Gas Company as saying that Iran has increased the volume of gas exports to Turkey to 30 million cubic meters per day as a blast halted gas exports from Azerbaijan to Turkey.

The Turkish energy ministry said that the explosion on the Turkish section of the Baku Tbilisi Erzurum pipeline transporting Azerbaijani gas to Turkey resulted from a terror act.

BP Azerbaijan operator of the Azerbaijani offshore Shah Deniz field, which produces gas transported via the BTE pipeline, said that at the request of the Turkish pipeline company Botas, gas supply to the company's system was suspended.

Mr Boujarzadeh said that "Whenever the flow of gas exports into Turkey faces a problem, Iran will be ready to make for the reduced imports.

Mr Alireza Gharibi MD of Iran's Gas Engineering and Development Company said that "The third section of the sixth cross country gas pipeline of Iran which is aimed to export natural gas to Europe via Turkey is around 48 percent complete."

Once the pipeline comes on stream it will have the capacity to transfer 100 million cubic meters of gas per day. However, the economic feasibility of the Southern Gas Corridor and in particular the construction of 300 kilometers of pipes beneath the waters of the Caspian Sea is said to be cheaper and shorter.

Oil prices soar amid possible new sanctions on Iran

Oil prices have hit 2 month high over a series of developments including the fear of shortage in global supplies amid the possibility of further illegal sanctions against Iran’s energy sector.

Crude prices for November delivery jumped by 4 percent and reached almost USD 92 per barrel. Brent November crude saw USD 4.5 increase settling just below USD 113.

The hikes hit drivers in the US state of California the most as they saw gas prices soar this week by nearly 5%. A refinery fire in the state of Texas also sent gas prices up 5% in the South Central state.

At the beginning of 2012, the United States and the European Union imposed sanctions on Iran’s oil and financial sectors with the goal of preventing other countries from purchasing Iranian oil and conducting transactions with the Central Bank of Iran.

The illegal US engineered sanctions were imposed based on the unfounded accusation that Iran is pursuing non civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program.

Iran rejects the allegations, arguing that as a committed signatory to the nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency it has the right to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

The US and some of its European allies have moved to pile up economic pressure on Iran. New sanctions could be announced at the next meeting of EU foreign ministers in mid October.

Again, this is what happened in Iraq. So, I think the sanctions are probably counter-revolutionary.

Iran doubles drilling rigs in joint oil fields

Tehran Times cited Mr Mohsen Khojastemehr deputy oil minister of Iran as saying that the country's drilling rigs in the joint oil fields have doubled in the last 2 years. Iran possessed 26 drilling rigs across its joint oilfields in 2 years ago which has increased to 53 rigs in last year.

He expressed the hope that the drilling rigs across Iran's joint oilfields would reach to 70 rigs by the end of current Iranian calendar year which will end on March 20th 2013. 98 rigs are currently in operation on Iran's onshore fields and 25 on its offshore fields 24 in the Persian Gulf and one in the Caspian Sea.

Previously, Mr Ahmad Qalebani MD of National Iranian Oil Company had said that Iran plans to increase the number of rigs operating on oilfields by 36 units to hit 134 units by March 2014.

Currently, Iran's in-place oil reserves are estimated at 560 billion barrels of which 140 billion barrels are recoverable including 70 billion barrels of heavy and extra heavy crudes.
